VEHICLE IMPORT REGULATIONS RELEASED

The new import regulations 2019 were finally released this week with some major improvements bound to put a grin on enthusiasts’ faces.

YES – We have secure indoor storage available now (incl weekly start and run) for anyone wanting to get a jump on the market prior to 10 Dec 2019.
YES – the 25 Year Rule is definitely on and applies to passenger cars, offroad passenger cars (Yes – Landcruisers, Safaris, Surfs etc.), motorcycles and light goods vehicles.

Just like the USA in recent years, buying classic cars a year or more in advance will quickly become the norm for Australia.

December will be on us before we know it and given that some special cars may take months to source - it’s advisable to plan ahead.
POINTS WORTH NOTING
YES – modified cars will be allowed under the 25 Year Rule with age calculated from the date of the last major modification.

Perhaps the BIGGEST change to new SEVS is much more flexibility in the consideration of model VARIANTS.

This will allow the import of a wide range of models that were sold here new but as a different spec.

“Significantly different” is now better defined with examples, and is actually quite open which will lead to a lot more choice than we have had in the past.
Import Honda Civic Type R FD2 under New SEVS
The Civic Type R is just one of the models Australia now has access to under the updated SEVS.

MORE FLEXIBLE - the SEVS 'performance' threshold is now relaxed to 110 kW/T for vehicles built before Jan 2020 and 130 kW/T if built after Jan 2020 which will enable many more models to be approved for import.
GOING GREEN
PLUS now we can import virtually any hybrid, electric and kei class car providing it wasn’t sold new in Australia in the same spec.
