Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou kātoa te whānau whānui o te Kura Pokapū o Whakatū –
Greetings to friends and family of Nelson Central School.

We are in full swing for the term now. Classes are humming with learning, the playground is a hive of activity and the sports fields are all go with teams having started various sports for the season. This week Te Pouahi are holding their annual Noho Marae at Whakatū Marae. This is a great chance to build whanaungatanga within the syndicate and across the whānau and wider community.

We have reviewed our communication processes following the fire of a couple of weeks ago and have put in place a text message system for situations such as this. This will allow us to send out urgent messages to parents. This will only be used in emergency situations and there will not be capacity to reply to these messages. You can imagine that in situations such as this our office becomes very busy and we appreciate people calmly following our instructions to ensure everyone is safe.

On Wednesday 13 March there will be a meeting for the School Community Group at 7pm in the staffroom. We invite all parents to this meeting and hope that people might be willing to give their time and energy towards making some of our fantastic school events the success they have been in previous years.

Ma whero ma pango ka oti ai te mahi

With red and black the work will be complete- this whakatauki refers to the traditional kowhaiwhai patterns inside a meeting house and provokes the idea of people working together for a common goal.

If your child is away from school for any reason (sickness or holiday) you need to contact the school office before 8.50am to advise us of their absence.

For the safety of your children it is important that we are informed if your child is not coming to school for any reason.  This also applies if your child is going to be late.  Our school day starts at 8.55am and absences can be left on our phone before school by contacting 548 4972 or you can text 027 7590096.  Or go to Nelson Central School Website and click on school absences.

Road Crossing

Pedestrian Crossing
As you know our year 6 children do a wonderful job each day making sure our students cross the road safely to and from school on the pedestrian crossing on Nile Street.  We have seen a big increase in traffic along this street and the children are finding it increasingly difficult to put the signs out for people to cross when there are no breaks in the traffic.  This is a request to parents who are driving along Nile Street before or after school and you see people waiting to cross the road, the road patrollers would really appreciate it if you could stop to allow them time to put the signs out.

New Website
We are hoping to go live with our new website by the end of this week. This will be a landing space for both current and perspective school families, featuring important information, events and notices.

There will be desktop, tablet and mobile site so it  will be optimised for whatever device you choose to view it on.

The address will remain www.nelsoncentral.school.nz.

Any feedback would be most welcome. Please send to john@nelsoncentral.school.nz
Lost Property

Kia ora families,

Please can you check the school lost property. We have many unnamed items including googles, togs, towels, shoes, jackets, drink bottles and hats. It is located outside Room 9 on the deck. I am looking for some parent volunteers who will be able to help sort and wash lost property. If you can spare some time please get in touch with Kate in Room 9.

Kowhai News
This week in Kowhai we have started our reading programme. We are using a variety of ways to learn new high frequency words including sight words cards being sent home for extra practice and using fly swatters to quickly find and read new words.

Suddenly a new sandpit appeared bringing  anew aspect to our Kowhai play. A big thank you to Tim's Garden Services for helping to make this happen.

Pohutukawa News

Congratulations to our Pohutukawa superstars. These children were awarded certificates at this week's Syndicate Assembly.

We would like to say a big thank you to the families that were able to attend our Syndicate picnic on Tuesday. It was a lovely way to meet the Kaiako (teachers), Tamariki (children), and parents of the classes. We look forward to working with you all over the year.

Room 12 have visited the Life Education bus throughout week 4 and 5. We have been learning about being a good friend, being a special person and accepting others. Harold sang us a song and read us a story. The children really enjoyed this experience!

Meet the NCS News Team of 2019. We are having lots of fun learning about the skills required to make our own broadcasting channel. We have teams of researchers, writers, reporters, camera crew and editors to bring you the news that matters from our kura.

We hope you can see our skills progress each episode as we bring you an episode every two weeks.

If you have an interesting news story you would like us to follow up, please get in touch with our editor in chief Ruby (ruby@nelsoncentral.school.nz) and our teacher Amy amy@nelsoncentral.school.nz

Challenging Media

A new resource for parents has been released from the Chief Censor called Challenging media: talking with young people about what they are watching.

We have copies in the office in both te reo Māori and English, or you can access the resource via their website.

Although these resources are focussed more on teenagers, the messages are very relevant to all whānau.

Nelson Pine Griffins School Visit : Winners of the Hawke Cup

We were very lucky to have a visit to school from Nelson Pine Griffins Cricket Coach Ryan Edwards and Central Stags all rounder William Luddick. Ryan talked to the students about the Hawke Cup and  introduced William to the sudents. Both were asked many varied questions by the students who enjoyed the visit. Nelson won the cup for the first time in 22 years beating Southland in Invercargill on Sunday.
The Griffins will face challengers Marlborugh this weekend at Saxton Oval. The team this weekend will have 4 ex Central School pupils: Thomas Zohrab, David Zohrab, Nic Clark and  Felix Murray. I am sure they will welcome all support.

History of the Hawke Cup:
The Hawke Cup is the major competition for New Zealand Cricket's District Associations.
The competition is split into four regional Zones. Within each zone, a full round robin is played, games contested over two days. Each Zone’s regional winner then gets a three-day Hawke Cup Challenge against the current holders. To win the Hawke Cup, challengers must beat the holders on their home ground, either outright or on the first innings.

Arts

We are excited to welcome NZ Opera back to NCMA on 18 March at 1pm, bringing their School's production of Rossini's "The Barber of Seville".

Rossini's razor-sharp musical wit delivers in riotous technicolour. Dashing Count Almaviva is in love with the feisty young Rosina. But her guardian, Dr. Bartolo, is determined to marry her himself. Cue Figaro – aka The Barber of Seville – with a series of hair-brained schemes, one of which just might work.

The production is particularly suitable for students aged 7-14, and an accompanying teaching resource pack will be distributed to schools in advance. The event will be of value to students at all levels of the NZ curriculum with particular relevance to the Understanding music – Sound arts in context strand.

The cost for this show is $5.00 per child.  We have limited tickets, please contact the school office if you would like your child/children to attend.
