Osa’s Story
Osa in net Osa at Care Hospital with Leslie & Joe
On Monday February 4, Stephanie LaMotta Death Row Dogs Director pulled Osa from West Valley Animal Shelter for CARL. During the severe thunder the week before Osa had freaked and broke her canine tooth on the chain link and possibly dislocated her jaw. The shelter put her on euthanasia list because she was injured.
Irene Rhodes of Santa Barbara’s Consumer Fire Products saw the pleas on the internet and was incensed that a shelter would kill an injured dog rather than helping. She began calling the shelter and rescues in the LA area offering to pay all medical to a rescue who would save her. She had no luck in LA and reached out to CARL. We said yes and with the assistance of Joan from Adoptachowla arranged the pull by Death Row Dogs. Our regular transporter Dennis from Animal Resources Inc picked up Osa from West Valley Shelter and drove her to Adobe Animal Hospital in Santa Barbara for treatment arranged by Irene. (Osa Poster)
That is when things got worse for Osa. She escaped in the parking lot and began 12 days of evading a crowd of rescuers. Around 6 pm Feb 16 Joe Martinez of Doggie Day Care in Santa Barbara flung a net over her and she was safe! (Osa in net picture)
They took her to CARE Hospital in Santa Barbara for the night. As news of her rescue spread tears and smiles of joy and relief were everywhere. This dramatic rescue was the result of days of searching and posting on social media and telephone poles. So many people were involved in her rescue I can never identify and thank them all. Joe Martinez, Leslie Bloomer of Aussie Rescue, Christina Hahn of CARL, and others were out daily and nightly. Julia from Animal Rescue Team loaned nets and other rescue equipment, Karin and Kim from Dog Days Search and Rescue were there for the successful rescue. The rescue community is strong and the cooperative efforts for Osa were remarkable. All CARL volunteers are grateful to the greater Santa Barbara community for your efforts saving Osa (pic Leslie and Joe)

Poison Prevention Awareness Month
March is designated as Pet Poison Prevention Awareness Month. Understanding what potential harmful poisons exist in your home and yard is the first step to keeping your pet safe. Some of them are very obvious and others might be new to you.
Here’s the Top Ten Pet Poison List for dogs and cats from the Pet Poison Helpline. Based on the Pet Poison Helpline call volume and extensive database, here are the top 10 most common toxins that Pet Poison Helpline gets called about. Now keep in mind that some of these listed are very toxic, while some are minimally toxic (like ant baits and silica packs). When in doubt, call your vet or Pet Poison Helpline to make sure there won’t be a problem. Take special care to keep these toxins out of your pet’s reach and pet-proof your house!
Dog Poisons:
- Chocolate
- Mouse and Rat Poisons (rodenticides)
- Vitamins and Minerals (e.g., Vitamin D3, iron, etc.)
- NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen, etc.)
- Cardiac Medications (e.g., calcium channel blockers, beta-blockers, etc.)
- Cold and Allergy Medications (e.g., pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine, etc.)
- Antidepressants (e.g., selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors)
- Xylitol (common in toothpaste and chewing gum – read your labels to ensure your pet is safe!)
- Acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol)
- Caffeine Pills
Cat Poisons:
- Topical spot-on insecticides
- Household Cleaners
- Antidepressants
- Lilies
- Insoluble Oxalate Plants (e.g., Dieffenbachia, Philodendron, etc.)
- Human and Veterinary NSAIDs
- Cold and Flu Medication (e.g., Tylenol)
- Glow Sticks
- ADD/ADHD Medications/Amphetamines
- Mouse and Rat Poison
If you suspect your pet has ingested any of these items or any other questionable substance, call Pet Poison Helpline or your veterinarian for assistance. Accurate and timely identification of the suspected substance is very important. Having the container, package, or label in hand will save valuable time and may save the life of your pet.

Recycling Fundraiser
The CARL Kennels needs your recyclable plastic bottles and aluminum cans. Instead of throwing them in your recycling container at curb side, why not separate them in bags of aluminum cans and plastic bottles and bring them to the kennel. All money goes back to the repairs and upkeep of the kennel such as shade tarps, poop bags, etc. It’s good for the can, it’s good for the dogs.
This is an ongoing fundraiser. Contact C.A.R.L at http://info@carlvc.org If you would like to donate recyclable bottles, cans.
