Dalat Celebrates 90 Years!

달랏 90주년을 축하하며!

Dalat celebrates 90 years of exemplary education!

Dalat’s rich heritage began in 1929 with just three students in the city of Da Lat, Vietnam. Since that time, the school has invested in the lives of thousands of children, even while facing challenges of war and relocation. Through it all, Dalat has remained committed to its primary purpose of providing an excellent Christian education for life to its students.

Today our campus is home to nearly 700 day and boarding students from 25 countries. Our graduates number more than 3,500 living throughout the world — each one has woven his or her unique voice, personality, and talents into Dalat’s tapestry.
"This will make us one of only 15 schools in the world and the first one internationally to receive this level of recognition from ACSI."

If you have been at school this week, you might have noticed seven individuals walking around our campus and visiting our classrooms. These seven people were part of the accreditation team sent here to evaluate our school program. As part of WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) and ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International) we must meet certain standards and expectations to receive their approval of our diploma. When accredited by these organizations, our diploma is then accepted all over the world by universities and colleges. We have been accredited with WASC for over 30 years and with ACSI for over 24 years.

To be accredited with these two organizations, we submit a self-study report that shows evidence of the learning that is taking place and all that Dalat does to educate our students. A team of individuals then come to visit the campus to verify the report and evaluate us based on the organization’s educational standards. They then submit a report that details what we are doing well and areas for us to improve upon to the WASC and ACSI commissions. The recommendations become part of our improvement plan for the future.

What is unique about the visit this time is that the team included two more individuals who were sent solely to evaluate us in regards to achieving what is called “exemplary” status with ACSI. This includes being evaluated on another set of standards and expectations (fifty of them) that are found in exceptional schools around the world. Very simply, we were being evaluated with a much higher standard then what is used for a regular accreditation visit.

Thursday we received a report from the visiting team that we are being recommended to the commission to receive exemplary status. This will make us one of only 15 schools in the world and the first one internationally to receive this level of recognition from ACSI.

Though this is a proud and exciting accomplishment, the most important aspect of the team’s visit is their input and specific recommendations on how we can continue to improve as a school. As we move forward, their feedback will be used to help direct the administration and staff to become an even better school. You will hear more about these plans and initiatives in the coming months.

Have a great weekend,.

Physical Exams Required Next Year for
Fifth and Ninth Grade Students

5학년과 9학년 학생들, 신체 검사 요청

Starting in the 2019-20 school year, Dalat will require physical exams by your children’s doctor as they enter fifth and ninth grade.

Why? In the past, the only physical required by the school was when your child entered Dalat School. That means for many students, the only physical on file is when they were in early elementary school. We want to ensure that middle school and high school students are kept up to date with their immunizations, that they are physically fit to participate in higher level sports competitions, and that they are having regular wellness checks by their doctor to ensure early detection of any illnesses.

Here is a link to the physical exam form that you can take to your doctor.

Please submit the completed physical exam form in August, at the beginning of next school year, to our Registrar Kim Kang, whose office is located to the left of the Main Office reception desk.

New Way to Track Service Hours

고등학생들 학습 시간 추적 시스템(TRACK IT FORWARD)
Last week we rolled out a new system to help streamline the way high school students track and record their service hours. TRACK IT FORWARD is an innovative digital solution that allows students to record service hours through a website or mobile app. Using the app, they can even take a selfie or capture their location using GPS, eliminating the need for signatures and paper forms that can get lost. (Pictured above is a student volunteering at the House of Hope.)

Life just got a little simpler.

Dalat Swimmers Claim State Titles

달랏 수영선수들  메달 획득
Lonely hours in the pool. Tired muscles, late nights, busy weekends. Tien-Erh Huang and Ashley Chew are undeterred. Hard work and dedication to their swimming careers paid off this weekend with 10 medals at the state competition here in Penang.

The remarkable resilience displayed by Huang and Chew has quietly evolved over many years. They receive less recognition on campus for their excellence than they deserve. Many fellow students are likely unaware that the two high school students are competitive swimmers. Yet they continue to achieve at a very high level!

Tien Erh is the last in a group of elite swimmers from Dalat. Elynn Tan and her brother Alwyn recently graduated from Dalat with NCAA Division I scholarships for swimming. Tien Erh’s sister Ke Erh won many medals at the state level. Now it’s Tien Erh’s turn and the sophomore is making the most of it. Two freestyle gold medals and seven silver medals in her remaining events puts Tien Erh in elite company.

Following right behind her is freshman Ashley Chew who landed a bronze medal in the 50 butterfly plus some top 10 finishes in four other events. As the youngest in her age category, Ashley has some time to grow into the competition.

Where will they go from here? With this kind of work ethic and determination, the answer belongs to Tien Erh and Ashley who seem to show no signs of slowing down!

Your Annual Fund Gifts
are Already at Work!

여러분의 연감 기금이 이미 사용되고 있습니다 !
你的年度礼物已经在工作了
Many thanks to those who joyfully supported Dalat’s Annual Fund. Here are a few of the things that your gifts have made possible, all for the benefit of our students. We will continue to share throughout the semester the fruits that have come from the tree of generosity from the Dalat community. Thank you for loving and supporting our students!

Dalat’s Boarding program requested RM3,500 for new sporting equipment and games for the dorms. Our community made that possible, and now those who love to get out on the water  have brand new PFD life vests to keep them safe while paddling in Dalat’s kayaks.

Thank you for providing these for our students!

Care & Share Update

케어앤셰어 새 소식
Care & Share 消息更新
Last week a pastor I have known for five years was visiting in Penang. He has an amazing ministry of educating poor children from mountain villages in India. Through Care & Share, we contributed RM500 to his ministry, but we really wanted to double that donation.

Later that day I received my only ang pao (Chinese New Year) envelope for RM100. I was very encouraged. A pastor friend of mine from Canada sends me CAD$100 (RM300), and then a middle school student donates to Care & Share. And FINALLY, the last piece fell into place: three ES students had a lemonade stand over the weekend (pictured above) and donated the money to Care & Share. Now we have the full RM500 to double our original donation!

The Lord moves hands and hearts to invest in his kingdom! I am humbled and very grateful.
