Whatever you give up this Lent, don't let it be the fight against hunger and poverty

Dear Friend,

This Lent, many of us will choose to give up certain foods or special treats – but not everyone has this luxury.

As a nation, we expect no one should be left hungry but last year we saw the highest ever need in food banks. Our network provided more than 1.3 million emergency food parcels to people in crisis – almost half a million of these went to children.

This is not right. In the run up to Easter, we’re #NotGivingUp the fight against hunger and poverty in the UK, and we urge you to join us to help people like Andrew.

Andrew's story

After experiencing an income shock, Andrew and his family were moved on to the new benefits system, Universal Credit. Andrew had to wait five weeks before his first payment and he struggled to cover the costs of essentials and became overdrawn. Andrew said:

‘We’d managed our budget perfectly well for several years. When our circumstances changed, we didn’t know where to go to ask questions and get answers. It creates an anxiety on top of the financial stress. That was the most difficult part for me.’

No charity can replace the dignity of having enough money to buy your own food. With you help, we can create a future where no one needs a food bank’s help.

Whether you’re giving up something this Lent or not, we want to ensure that no one gives up the fight against hunger and poverty in the UK.

From all of us here at the Trussell Trust, thank you.

Warmest wishes,
