Rights for people, rules for corporations – Stop ISDS
Sign the petition
CIDSE  has joined the “Stop ISDS coalition” – an alliance of over a hundred NGOs – and is supporting the call to the European Union to stop promoting Investor to State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) and support a UN binding Treaty on Transnational Corporations to give people and governments the ability to hold the private sector to account.

 The cracks of a dangerous extractivist mode
Solidarity with the victims of Brumadinho
4 years after the “Mariana” disaster, the collapse on 25 January of the Brumadinho dam operated by Vale in the same region of Brazil, caused another terrible socio-environmental disaster. CIDSE denounces the impunity of mining companies and the lack of full reparations for victims, and advocates for alternatives to extractivism that respect people and nature.

Towards greater gender equality in CIDSE leadership
First female CIDSE President
CIDSE Directors elected Lieve Herijgers, Director of Broederlijk Delen (Belgium) as new President at their annual Board meeting. Lieve becomes the first CIDSE female President at a time when more women directors are joining the CIDSE Board. At the same meeting, CIDSE also welcomed a new member, Vastenactie, the second one in the Netherlands, alongside CORDAID

UPCOMING
  • CIDSE member organisations will launch their traditional national Lenten campaigns on first day of Lent. (06/03/2019)
  • Together with Franciscans International (FI), the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), Fastenopfer, Bread for All, FIAN, EURAC and WILP, CIDSE will co-sponsor a side event on mining disasters with testimonies from Brazil and DRC during the 40th session of the Human Rights Council. (Geneva, 06/03/2019, 3-4 pm, Room XXIV)  
  • CIDSE will participate in preparatory meetings for the Pan-Amazonian Synod scheduled from 6 to 27 October 2019. (Washington DC, 19-21/03) 
  • CIDSE and its members are planning national screenings of the documentary “Energy to Change” launched last December in Katowice. The first event was organised by FEC in Lisbon on 25 February. For more information, please contact Giorgio Gotra (gotra(at)cidse.org).

OTHER NEWS
  • CIDSE Directors kicked off the process for the mid-term review of the CIDSE Strategic Framework 2016-2021 at their annual Board meeting (The Hague, 23-25/01/2019). The review is to be completed in June.
  • CIDSE and the Justice and Peace Commission Europe co-hosted the Global Catholic Climate Movement (GCCM) webinar which discussed major developments in Catholic Fossil Fuel Divestment in 2018. (29/01/2019)
  • Members of the CIDSE thematic priorities met in Brussels to plan their respective activities and agree on their workplans for 2019. (13-14/02/2019).

  • Manos Unidas (Spain) is celebrating its 60th Anniversary
  • CIDSE members in Italy and the US have new leadership: Gianni Del Bufalo is the new Director of Focsiv and Susan Gunn is the new Director of Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns.
  • Due to financial constraints, Center of Concern (USA) had to close its offices in Washington DC and end its membership with CIDSE. Ignatian Solidarity Network (ISN) has taken over the hosting of its Education for Justice (EFJ) programme.


NEWS FROM THE SECRETARIAT
  • Valentina Pavarotti, CIDSE’s Media and Communication Officer is on maternity leave until the end of the year. During her absence, she is replaced by Marta Isabel González Álvarez who has been seconded by Manos Unidas (Spain).
  • After 15 years at CIDSE, Jean Saldanha, CIDSE’s Senior Advisor on Systemic Change, will leave the Secretariat at the end of March to become Director of EURODAD.
