Dealing with Internet Shutdowns by Governments
 Two weeks ago, I was privileged to be one of the panelists on a Webinar put together by ISOC Nigeria Chapter, discussing on the theme: The Internet as a force for social good - Avoiding Internet shutdowns in Africa.
There is no doubt that the Internet is fast becoming a basic human need. We rely on it for education, health and fitness, happiness (real or imagined), low-cost long-distance communication, security, income and many other essentials of life.
The fluid, borderless nature of the Internet has however led to concerns by traditional government authorities about how it is used by the people. Some governments with insufficient understanding or capacity to engage stakeholders have even resorted to looking for some sort of "kill” switch to severe people’s connection to the Internet partially or totally as it suits their purpose. Will this be an effective solution to calming civil unrest?

ICANN Calls for Full DNSSEC Deployment
 As we all know, the mission of The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is to help ensure a stable, secure, and unified global Internet. We also know that to reach another person on the Internet, an address must be typed – a name or a number – into the computer or other device. That address must be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN helps coordinate and support these unique identifiers across the world.
As one of many entities engaged in the decentralized management of the Internet, ICANN is specifically responsible for coordinating the top-most level of the Domain Name System (DNS) to ensure its stable and secure operation and universal resolvability.
On the 22 nd February 2019, ICANN published an article stating “an ongoing and significant risk to key parts of the DNS infrastructure”.
In the context of increasing reports of malicious activity targeting the DNS infrastructure, ICANN is calling for full deployment of the Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) across all unsecured domain names. The organization also reaffirms its commitment to engage in collaborative efforts to ensure the security, stability and resiliency of the Internet’s global identifier systems.

CALL FOR FELLOWSHIPS FOR AFRINIC-30 IS NOW OPEN
 AFRINIC is offering fellowships for the AFRINIC-30 meeting which will hold in Kampala, Uganda from 15th to 21st June 2019. The fellowship is reserved for individuals representing small organisations, universities and media, who are actively involved in Internet operations and development or ICT policies in their countries. The fellow is expected to positively and actively contribute to IP address management awareness in the AFRINIC service region. AFRINIC has set criteria to qualify for the fellowship.
Upon selection, AFRINIC will notify the selected fellows directly and allow them twenty (20) days to accept or reject the offer. A public announcement of the fellowship awardees would be made after the acceptance by the selected candidates.
The closing date for application is 15th March 2019 whilst AFRINIC would notify the selected fellows by 3rd April 2019.

ICANN64 Prep Week
ICANN org is piloting a new initiative called Prep Week to consolidate all pre-ICANN Public Meeting webinars into one week. Starting with ICANN64, Prep Week will streamline the pre-meeting experience, so deeper conversations can be had in the ICANN meeting sessions.
Four webinars will hold towards the ICANN64 Prep Week on Multi-stakeholder Strategy and Strategic Initiatives (MSSI), Contractual Compliance Update, Policy Update and Finance/Operating Plan and Budget Planning from 27th to 28th february 2019.
