    ISSUE 8: March 2019

Editors' Note

Dear Readers,

It has been an eventful 45 days since our last issue. Louisiana narrowly escaped (for now) the clinic closures that would have accompanied an admitting privileges law that reproductive rights advocates have been challenging since 2014. This issue, one that is most urgent in our local context, but has immense implications nationally, has posed quite a conundrum to the artificial division ReproNews has erected between “national” and “campus/local” news (see below).

While this battle has been raging on the national stage, we have had many exciting and inspiring conversations on campus about reproductive rights, health, and justice. NCI’s symposium featuring Dorothy Roberts, Marisa Fuentes, and Deirdre Cooper Owens provided an opportunity for intellectual engagement around how race, gender, sexuality, and the law intersect to structure reproductive injustices in the United States and abroad. Similarly, Yana Rodgers’ discussion of her new book, The Global Gag Rule, challenged us all to understand the connections between restrictions on abortion and the overall health and wellbeing of women and families around the globe.

Check out our Spotlight article by Tulane Public Health graduate student, Isabella Parise, to learn more about how student organizations across Tulane partner to expand reproductive rights and sexual health on campus and in New Orleans. Spotlight Article

Students Organizing Around Reproductive Rights, Health, and Justice from a Public Health Perspective
Isabella Parise, School of Public Health, MPH '20
As a public health graduate student in the Global Community Health and Behavioral Sciences program, I believe everyone should have equitable access to all sexual and reproductive health services. New Orleans is an under-resourced and high-risk area in terms of sexual and reproductive health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Louisiana ranks number two in syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea rates. After teaching sexual health education locally for years, I realized that communities need more engagement. Too many communities do not have access to evidence-bases sexual health education, safer sex materials, and reproductive health services. It is the job of public health professionals to help fill the gap of resources and information. For this reason, I chose to get involved with student organizations on campus that work on these issues. Participating in Students United for Reproductive Freedom-Public Health (SURPH) has been life-altering. It has enabled me to do meaningful work on my college campus and in the local community. For example, SURPH organizes general body meetings, invites expert speakers to educate us and disseminate knowledge, and hosts volunteer/fundraising events to advance our agenda.

SURPH also partners with Planned Parenthood Generation Action (PPGA), which is led by an amazing team of women, including representatives from fellow Tulane reproductive rights/health/justice organizations, and is supported by a grant from Planned Parenthood. SURPH and PPGA have worked with Students United for Reproductive Justice (TU Undergraduates), If, When, How (TU Law Students), Medical Students for Choice (TU Medical Students), and Social Workers United for Reproductive Freedom (TU Social Work Students) to build a collaborative movement for sexual health on campus and in the community. We have focused our efforts on protecting access to safe, legal abortions, promoting sexual and reproductive health services, distributing safer sex materials, and reducing the burden to access menstruation products. Various members of these organizations participated in Healthy Neighborhood Canvases for Planned Parenthood. Volunteers went door-to-door discussing the wide variety of services available at the New Orleans clinic. This semester, SURPH will table for Planned Parenthood with Students University for Reproductive Justice on the Uptown campus. As such, we will discuss Planned Parenthood, the work they do, services they offer and how to engage in local advocacy work.

Stay tuned for details of events happening during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, in April. Additionally, In the coming weeks, we will release details about our “Day of Advocacy.” On this day, we will travel to Baton Rouge to discuss reproductive justice topics with government officials. This event will be open to undergraduate and graduate students. Throughout the semester, we will continue to work together to achieve our goals, expand access to sexual health resources and fearlessly protect women’s right to choose. If you would like more information about these efforts or would like to become involved, please contact Isabella Parise at iparise@tulane.edu.
