February Highlight | TRIA Surgical Skills Lab

Did you know that TRIA houses a state-of-the art surgical skills training lab?
What was once called the Bio Skills Lab is now the Surgical Skills Lab. The decision to change our name was made to help expand our reach to host other surgical specialties in the lab, and help others understand that we are not limited to orthopaedic education. That change brought forth an exciting opportunity to work with a robotic vendor in 2018 focusing on other services such as thoracic, bariatric, and general surgery.

Where is it located?
The Lab is located on the lowest level of TRIA Orthopaedic Center in Bloomington. This is a direct reflection of our mission, as one of our core values is education and in this case we are built on it, literally from the ground up.

What is the lab?
The lab is a simulated operating room environment, designed to enhance the learner’s experience. The lab boasts 2,400 square feet, six whole donor stations, eight arthroscopy or endoscopy stations, sawbones training, and an engaged staff to support all lab needs. The lab can be used for surgical basics all the way to learning specialized/advanced treatments and procedures. Our set-up also allows industry vendors to showcase and educate medical professionals on new-to-the-market products and instrumentation, as well as revisiting ‘oldies but goodies’ to perfect surgical techniques. The lab hosts 70+ courses a year and we are already on an upward trend for 2019.

What’s next?
We are excited to host the annual month long didactic and gross anatomy course with the University of MN Orthopaedic Surgery Residents and are looking forward to our newest annual event, the Minnesota Scapula Course with Dr. Peter Cole.

We are eager to gain more interest from area surgeons wanting to advance their surgical abilities as technology evolves and develops. Contact us to learn more at surgicalskills@tria.com or (952) 806-5603.

Staff Feature | Justine Christ, Surgical Skills Lab Coordinator

This month we would like to highlight our Surgical Skills Lab Coordinator, Justine.  In her role, she will be facilitating scheduling, maintaining and taking care of the administrative side of the lab, as well as focusing on attracting new clients and increasing lab events.  Justine will also work with our current internal teams of residents and fellows who regularly train utilizing the skills lab.

Here are a few questions we asked to get to know her.
