The legal situation between Axanar producer and former director Robert Meyer Burnett heats up. The Georgia court where Peters is suing Burnett hasn't quite made it to the 21st century yet, so we're waiting for our copy of the legal complaint to come by <fans self>the mail</fan self>. #staytuned

1. Peters Sues Former Axanar Director

SHOOTING ‘HEROES’ Axanar producer Alec Peters (left) on the bridge of the Enterprise with former Axanar director Robert Meyer Burnett during an October 2015 shoot of the Axanar short, “Heroes.”

Peters v. Burnett: Producer Alec Peters files suit this week in Georgia state court against his former colleague Robert Meyer Burnett, who once was slated to direct Axanar. The suit has been brewing for almost two months since Peters started badmouthing his former colleague on Facebook:
‘I’m going to end this in court and then let everyone know this lying thief screwed us all.’

Legal complaint: An early draft of the complaint has Peters seeking $45,500 in damages, plus interest and attorneys fees for Burnett’s alleged failure to:

  • Repay a series of loans Peters made to Burnett from October 2014 to March 2015, totaling $31,550.
  • Complete four videos, behind-the-scenes featurettes about the making of Axanar.
Possible wrinkle — jurisdiction: The lawsuit was filed against Burnett in Georgia, where Peters lives. Burnett, however, is a California resident with no known business or personal ties in Georgia.
  • Georgia law typically doesn't extend to out-of-state defendants.
  • Burnett may have to appear in court to argue as a Californian that he can't be sued in Georgia.
Why it matters: If it's not dismissed the lawsuit could reveal much about the opaque financial workings inside Axanar while Peters was in charge of $1.2 million raised from fans for the never-produced feature film.

Cable cheaper than cable? Cable service Spectrum offers a streaming service featuring 63 basic cable channels to its internet service customers for just $15 a month. Is this a harbinger of a future capitulation by more cable companies as more and more of their internet subscribers cancel their TV packages? From the Verge.

On the other hand, maybe cord-cutting isn't turning out to be as big a deal as we thought it would. Cord Cutters News reports.
