Restorative environments symposia at ICEP 2019

The next International Conference on Environmental Psychology (ICEP): 'Protecting People and Planet through Social and Behavioural Science' will be held in Plymouth, UK, on 4-6 September 2019. Please find below calls for contributions to symposia on restorative environments.

Consolidation and extension in theory and research

We are seeking contributions for a symposium we hope to convene at ICEP. The intended theme of the symposium is "Restorative environments: Consolidation and extension in theory and research". Contributions concerned with consolidation could include, for example, reports on empirical studies designed to replicate well-known findings or conceptual analyses that clarify aspects of widely used theory. Contributions concerned with extension could include, for example, empirical studies focused on new methods and/or new practical applications.

Please send an expression of interest to both of us at the email addresses given below, along with a few sentences about the contents of the likely presentation. We are *not* requesting an abstract at this point. Given many expressions of interest, we will consult with the conference organizers about the possibility of having multiple sessions in the symposium. Once we know how many sessions we can work with and we have a coherent set of proposed presentations for the session(s), we will request abstracts, which we will then want to receive 22 March, a week before the deadline for abstract submission on 29 March.

Those interested in presenting on new theorizing and theoretical extensions or on the role of personality and other sociodemographic factors in modifying the restorative effects of environments should contact Femke Beute, Eleanor Ratcliffe and Kayleigh Wyles, who are organizing symposia on those topics.  We would certainly encourage others in the REN to also consider organizing symposia at the ICEP.

Convenors: Terry Hartig (terry.hartig@ibf.uu.se) and Henk Staats (staats@fsw.leidenuniv.nl)

Moving beyond the 'two theory' discourse

Attention restoration theory (ART) and stress reduction theory (SRT) are consistently presented alongside findings regarding restorative environments. Momentum is now growing to critically evaluate, develop, and offer alternatives to these two theories, and especially to explain phenomena such as collective restoration, restoration in built settings, and the role of different sensory experiences in restoration. In this symposium we offer a space for speakers to present new theoretical approaches or extensions. The symposium is envisioned as having a relatively small number of speakers (maximum four) and time for critical reflection and group discussion, with the aim of inspiring directions for future theoretical development and testing.

Please contact Eleanor Ratcliffe (eleanor.ratcliffe@surrey.ac.uk) with expressions of interest by 11 March, and abstracts by 22 March.

Person factors

Person factors present a key element to understand restorative effects of natural environments as well as the underlying mechanisms. For instance: 1) restorative potential of natural environments is lower for individuals who are professionally engaged with nature than for those who are not; 2) beneficial effects of nature are more pronounced for depressed than for healthy individuals; and 3) beneficial effects of nature may run through different pathways for children than for adults. This symposium aims to compose an overview of person factors that influence restoration outcomes, to advance knowledge on restorative environments and restoration theory.

Please contact Femke Beute (femke.beute@gmail.com) ASAP with expressions of interest, and abstracts by 22 March.
