Sounds like we may learn more details today as Penn State AD Barbour receives a contract extension to continue her tenure in Happy Valley. PSU doesn't release all the particulars until the document is final, but today's public Trustees meeting could shed some additional light on the length & any financial dynamics. Barbour's previous deal was due to expire at the end of August. Her FY17 base salary was $720,996. (link)
Syracuse: As you likely know, Cuse MBB HC Boeheim was the driver in a fatal car accident on Wednesday night after his squad defeated Louisville. Boeheim called police from the scene, fully cooperated & passed a field sobriety test. SU AD Wildhack: "Our hearts go out to all those impacted by the tragic accident involving Coach Boeheim. The Coach is heartbroken. Coach Boeheim met briefly with his team today but did not attend or participate in practice." (link); Boeheim: "I am heartbroken that a member of our community died as the result of last night’s accident. Juli (Boeheim) and I extend our deepest sympathies to the Jimenez family. Out of respect for those involved, I will not be providing further comment at this time." (link); ESPN College GameDay decides not to broadcast from the Syracuse-Duke game, "We spoke with school officials and they understand the decision." (link)
Duke: Standout MBB student-athlete Williamson, who suffered a knee injury early in Wednesday night's showdown with North Carolina, has a $8M loss of value insurance policy that was paid by the university. The Action Network's Rovell reports the cost of the policy was around $50K, but wouldn't kick in unless Williamson drops below the 16th pick of the NBA Draft. (link, link); A group of Nike officials flew in to meet with their Blue Devil counterparts last night after Williamson's shoe ripped open during his injury. A Duke spokesperson called the meeting, "Private conversation between two long-time partners." Nike's initial statement, "We are obviously concerned and want to wish Zion a speedy recovery. The quality and performance of our products are of utmost importance. While this is an isolated occurrence, we are working to identify the issue." (linklink); Sports Illustrated legal expert McCann says Williamson "could argue that Nike is liable for manufacturing a defective sneaker that caused his injury" if he's impacted longterm, but would "need to prove that his right knee injury was actually caused by his left sneaker falling apart" via expert testimony. McCann says Duke could also have claims against Nike, though, "it is extremely unlikely that Duke would attempt to sever its longstanding ties to Nike over one incident." (link); NPD Research footwear industry analyst Powell says the incident will have no extended impact on Nike's stock price as basketball shoes are no longer in style as normal streetwear. (link)
According to reports, the NBA has formally proposed to lower the minimum draft age to 18 in a move that must now be approved by the NBPA before impacting the college game by the time the 2022 draft rolls around. USA Today's Zillgitt says the timing of the news is coincidental, not strategic, in connection to the injury suffered by high-profile Duke student-athlete Williamson on Wednesday night. NBPA Executive Director Roberts was due to review the proposal over the past week. (link)
ACC Commish Swofford covers a handful of topics, does not believe the College Football Playoff will expand to eight participants anytime soon, but, "I won’t say that it will never happen." Swofford hopes the NBA & NBPA do end up lowering the minimum draft age to 18, isn't worried the college game will be negatively impacted, "College basketball didn’t miss LeBron James because he wasn’t there. College basketball is still about the names of the institutions on the front of the jerseys." The linear launch of the ACC Network is exactly six months away & Swofford points to "academic stories that don't get told" as one feature of the new programming, knows the revenue pie needs to continue to grow for his schools. (link)
Texas AD Del Conte has traveled to take in facilities at Alabama & Kentucky as he thinks about his own projects in Austin. Interestingly, Kentucky Governor Bevin met Del Conte & his crew at the airport to welcome them to the Bluegrass State (good to know how my tax dollars are being spent - ha!). Horns247 reports Del Conte stacked $95.7M in pure fundraising dollars on his first year on the job. Context: "That’s more than double the four previous years of related fund-raising by the Foundation combined ($38.7 million)." UT Senior Assoc. AD Hamor: "Chris’ message to us is '10 meaningful visits per week.' He’s not going out and closing every gift. But our staff knows if they’re close and need his help, he’s more than willing to help us close gifts. […] the biggest difference from the last several years here is Chris (Del Conte) is connected to our fans and listens to them." (linklink)

The Georgia fan responsible for throwing the stuffed animal on to the court at Stegeman Coliseum in the waning minutes of Wednesday night's MBB game against Mississippi State, which resulted in a technical foul against the Bulldogs, has had their ticket privileges revoked for "a designated period of time," per UGA AD McGarity. More McGarity on the matter, "It causes you to maybe reconsider things of that nature. Somebody could throw a plastic bottle or a cup of ice. Where do you draw the line?" The SEC says it's fully up to the discretion of the referees to call a technical foul in such a situation. (link)
"We want to compete for championships every single year, and to be able to stay focused and grow annually is hard to do, but we’ve found a way to do it. I think that’s the part that makes it most remarkable because this is something you’ve never seen in college athletics or college football before. It’s been great to be a part of." That's North Dakota State AD Larsen on the Bison's seven FB national titles in the last eight years. Larsen thinks there's still work to be done in Fargo, points to a new indoor practice facility, improvements for Track & Fields digs. On the culture for NDSU FB, "When you look over our history, we’ve had three losing seasons in 65 years. That doesn’t happen by accident, and it’s not because of one player or coach, it’s a program." (link)
Here's the letter former Michigan State AD/FB HC Perles wrote to MSU's Board of Trustees to communicate his resignation from the leadership group. Of note, "It has been no secret that I have been living with a number of health challenges. Despite the limitations, I continued to support the university and remained focused on fulfilling my commitments as a Trustee. As this year comes to a close, so begins a time of reflection. At age 84, my mobility is compromised and I live with the effects of Parkinson's every day. The ramifications of my health issues continue to grow. I have been blessed with a wife who has sacrificed much to tend to my needs and to provide constant care. At this juncture, I feel that Sally deserves some respite. We need to make our life smaller as we age and consider our quality of life. Our family has bled green and white for the better part of our lives. It's time to step back and allow the next generation to carry the MSU torch." (link)
Kennesaw State AD Overton is one of the first on the clock to hire a new MBB HC as Owls boss Skinner will step away after the season is complete. KSU is currently 5-23 (2-11) & 40-81 in Skinner's three-plus seasons. Overton on Skinner, "He has invested in the lives of countless student-athletes over the years, and we wish him the best in the future." (link)
We shared the podcast between Nebraska MBB HC Miles & Stadium's Goodman earlier in the week, but missed one of the most interesting comments from the Huskers' boss, "If they fire me, they're still going to pay me. … I'm still a millionaire. So I've got that going for me." While true, Miles has apologized, "Earlier this week, my (sarcastic) attempt at humor during a podcast failed. Anyone who knows me understands that I got into coaching and remain a basketball coach for reasons far beyond money. I apologize to anyone offended or taken aback by my flippant remark." (link)
More Personnel: Texas Tech AD Hocutt has been named to the USA Football Development Model Council, the focus of which is to "help create a safer and overall better game of football for future generations." (link); Kentucky OC/AHC Gran with a new three-year deal. $875K in year one with $25K bumps annually. Recruiting Coordinator/TE AC Marrow up to $600K with the same $25K increases. Both would owe the Cats a $150K buyout if they leave before their contracts are up. WR AC Smith up to $450K with a $100K buyout. (link); NBC Sports Group Prez Bevacqua will have the same title, but adds oversight of the Olympics, production and operations, among others, to his list of duties. (link); Under Armour boss Plank has turned to MSNBC anchor Ruhle for business advice "often in recent years" in a relationship that is "unusual and problematic" per sources on the inside UA. A romantic connection was shot down by a UA spokesperson, "Mr. Plank and Ms. Ruhle are friends. The idea that Mr. Plank uniquely listens to any one individual is absurd." (link)
College of Charleston attorneys have filed documents in the case involving Cougars AD Roberts & former Baseball HC Heath, believe there was "no conspiracy" between Roberts & current skipper Holbrook before Heath exited. CofC also says no evidence was destroyed. Specifically, the college's forensic expert found "no messages between Mr. Holbrook and Mr. Roberts during the relevant time period (1/1/2017 to 7/1/2017)." Not quite sure what this means, but the article ends with, "Attorneys for Heath want to set aside a settlement agreement." (link)
Construction on the east side expansion of TCU’s Amon G. Carter Stadium is about a month behind schedule due to inclement weather, according to AD Donati: "In the fall, because we had a rainy season, it put us behind 30 or 40 days behind. We're working like crazy to get that in time for the season. We had two of the rainiest months in our history so that didn't help. It will be difficult to predict [the completion date] right now because we need a significant break." Donati also said crews are working “around the clock” to get back on schedule. The $100M expansion includes the addition of 48 loge boxes, 22 luxury suites and 1,000 club seats. (link)
Facilities, continued: Marshall announces the $750K purchase of land from Flint Pigments Group that will serve as the site of a new 3,500-seat baseball stadium for the Thundering Herd. Estimated cost between $18M-20M as AD Hamrick hopes to break ground in March of 2020 with the facility ready to go a year later. (link - article, link - renderings); More renderings, these of how UMass plans to upgrade McGuirk Stadium. Suites, A/V upgrades, bubble, more. (link); Georgia will transition from the old metal halide lighting system at Sanford Stadium to a modern LED "Lumadapt" system installed by Ephesus Lighting. The units can be digitally adjusted, synchronized to music and produce special effects. Deputy AD for Operations Brooks is excited about that. (link); Illinois State's BoT will likely approve a $1.2 deal today to replace the Horton Fieldhouse roof, which was last replaced in 1993. Work would begin in July with a November completion date. (link); Golf.com's Cunningham profiles the Lauritsen/Wohlers Outdoor Golf Facility at Illinois. The 24-acre, fully irrigated, 360-degree practice center is modeled after Augusta National Golf Club. (link); The pitchers mound is the only place real dirt remains in Tennessee's new $1.25M turf baseball field. (link); Check out these ultra modern bunker luxury suites at the Utah Jazz arena, which NBA Commish Silver calls "as cool as anything I've seen anywhere." Super snazzy. (link)
The FB officiating alliance between the ACC, AAC & Big South adds the Colonial, Ivy & Patriot for the 2019 season. "The alliance will enable all six conferences to work together on a wide range of officiating matters, including scheduling, training, development, recruitment, retention and evaluation." (link); The SEC will utilize a Centralized Video Review process when league play starts this Baseball season. The system, similar to what is employed by MLB, will include a replay official in the SEC Video Center who will make decisions that are communicated to on-field umpiring crews. In instituting the system, the SEC becomes the first conference to implement such a process as permitted by the NCAA, which recently codified a set of regulations regarding replay’s use in baseball. The process will be tested at select non-conference games prior to the start of the SEC slate on March 15. (link)
Also Noticed: Updated MBB comparative rankings. (link); Four Penn grad students who are Chinese natives will broadcast the four remaining MBB home games in Mandarin, with the live video available on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet. (link); The North Carolina vs. Duke MBB game pulled a 3.2 overnight, the highest regular season MBB game on ESPN in 11 years. (link); The 16th edition of the NCAA Weekly Whistles covers end of half or end of game situations. (link); Louisiana FB will play at Texas in 2021 for $1.5M, at Minnesota in 2023 for $1.3M and will get $200K from Arizona State for the 2021 cancelled game. Additionally, the Ragin' Cajuns will play a MBB game at ASU next season for a $95K guarantee. (link); New Mexico State and Akron sign a home-and-home FB series, starting in Las Cruces in 2020 with a return trip to InfoCision Stadium in 2022. The Zips also add Michigan State and Saint Francis to their 2022 slate. The trip to Spartan Stadium is worth $1.5M while Akron will pay SFU $330K for the game. (link, link); A state Supreme Court ruled it will not take up former Penn State Prez Spanier's appeal of the misdemeanor conviction stemming from his involvement in the Sandusky saga. (link)
