USA: Yesterday, North Carolina said ‘this seems pretty conclusive’ and voted unanimously to hold a new election in the state’s congressional race. Reminder: back in November, it looked like Mark Harris - the Republican candidate - had won the election by 905 votes. But officials weren’t able to certify the vote...and opened up an investigation into whether Harris’ team was taking incomplete absentee ballots and filling them out. You read that right. Now, it looks like North Carolina will be heading to the polls again for round 2. In other news, police now say Jussie Smollett - who’s out on $100,000 bail - paid two men to stage his alleged attack for attention. Smollett still says he’s innocent.
WORLD: Heads up: the deadline for Brexit is next month. And the UK still hasn’t worked out a deal with the European Union. So recently, Ireland - half of which is sticking with the UK, and half of which is sticking with the EU - said ‘better safe than sorry’ and intro’d new legislation to ensure a smooth Brexit transition if a deal still hasn’t been worked out by the deadline. Stay tuned. Meanwhile, Botswana is reportedly thinking about lifting a ban on elephant hunting to keep the elephant population in check. Cue backlash. And in other news, Los Angeles just saw snow for the first time in nearly half a century. (Don’t) let it snow.
POLITICS: Everyone is talking about 5G. That’s the new generation of cellular mobile communications that gives users a higher data rate, higher system capacity, energy saving, and massive device connectivity. It’s also something China’s doing much better with than the US. So yesterday, Prez Trump took to Twitter to say ‘step it up, America.’ Then added that he wants “6G technology….as soon as possible.” Something that doesn’t yet exist. Future, is that you? Speaking of which, Oregon’s expected to become the first state to impose mandatory rent controls - aka when the cost of rent stays the same. Nike wishes they had that for their stock.
