This is the time of year we hate.  We are so over winter, but the mud, clouds, snow, ice, and brown ugliness continues.  Daffodils are showing about five inches of green leaves now.   Last year we cut our first daffodils on February 28, and then sweated out the following weeks after an early apricot bloom.  We do not think anything will be blooming early this year.  Snow cover keeps the ground cooler, helping to maintain dormancy of the fruit trees.  That same snow, however, keeps the ground saturated as it melts.  Driving between Bunker Hill and Winchester on Rt. 11 shows the expanse of flooded fields and standing water on both sides of the road.  We have lived here since 1976 and never seen this.  Wet water streams that normally only flow briefly after a heavy thunderstorm are still running full, as they have since early last summer.  Unless we get a longer drying cycle between rainy periods, we are looking at the same difficulties we faced last summer with planting and cultivation.  This only adds to our feelings of discontent.  Sometimes you have to dig really deep to find the hope that fuels farming.  Adding to our normal weather depression is that we have still received no word on when Miguel will be able to return from Mexico.  We have contacted his lawyer, who is trying to get information on the timing of his appointments, or reasons why he had not yet been scheduled for them.  We know that spring will be waiting outside one morning; the sun will shine for more than one day at a time; and the leaves  and grass will grow green again.  Spring always comes.  But Miguel's situation is not dependent on spring.  And that worries us more than the weather.
The Freight Station Farmers Market is open Tuesdays, and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
