Join us for discussions exploring the historical and contemporary struggles of indigenous, migrant, and queer communities within and against the American empire. This conference begins from and builds upon the perspective that the U.S. legal system was established as a mechanism to uphold white supremacy and settler colonialism and that centuries of U.S. military intervention, from Latin America to Southeast Asia, have wrongfully claimed the lives and the land of millions of people. Today, as Trump declares a national state of emergency to fund a border wall, we must ask ourselves and each other, what does it mean to be a lawyer in these times? How do we engage ethically with a legal system that is inherently violent and inhumane? If the government is not bound by the law, are we?
