Feels Like Home

This week, we celebrated the birthday of our founder, Louise Balmer. In 1926, she opened the Balmer School with just three teachers and four students. In her archived notes, we found one of her first students exclaiming, “This place feels like home!” Ninety-two years later, that same sentiment resonates in every corner of our campus. 
The Crisis of Connection

I have a very limited view from my office, literally and figuratively. Therefore, I try to be visible during milk breaks, lunch, and sporting and arts events. I truly enjoy interacting with our students to learn what they are thinking and how they are doing. Why? Because relationships are important.

Experiencing Theater Differently


During a discussion about sharing the power of art and theater, students wanted this year’s musical, Les Misérables, to be more inclusive. They wanted to open the experience to an audience that might be overlooked: individuals with sensory sensitivities. This was where the idea of a sensory-friendly version of the musical was born.
