24th Annual Environmental Health Sciences Research Symposium
(Pictured: Gwen Collman)

On February 13th, 2019 the Michigan Lifestage Environmental Exposures and Disease Center (M-LEEaD) and the Environmental Toxicology and Epidemiology Program (ETEP) co-sponsored the 24th Annual Environmental Health Sciences Research Symposium. The symposium featured talks by Dr. Susan Nagel, Dr. Paige Lawrence, and Dr. Gwen Collman.

Dr. Susan Nagel, Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women's Health at the University of Missouri School of Medicine, spoke about her team’s research on endocrine disrupting and developmental effects of chemicals used in natural gas extraction.

Dr. Paige Lawrence, Professor and Chair of the Department of Environmental Medicine and Professor of Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, gave a talk on how exposure to water contaminants associated with unconventional oil and gas extraction have been associated with adverse effects on the immune system.

Dr. Gwen Collman, Director of the Division of Extramural Research and Training at the National Institute of Environmental Health sciences, discussed environmental health opportunities and career paths. Her talk included descriptions of several types of research training grants that researchers may apply for at different stages in their career path.

Following the talks by the guest speakers, students and faculty were invited to attend a poster session featuring current research of EHS students and post-doctoral fellows. Poster presenters were evaluated and awards were given for first (Evan Hill), second (Elana Elkin), and third (Katrina Burns) place. ETEP and the M-LEEaD center would like to thank the speakers, staff, and students that helped to make this year’s symposium a success!

EPA is seeking applications proposing to develop a community participatory research program to facilitate addressing the following topics that will foster a better understanding of environmental contamination, impact, and mitigation options at the Vieques, Puerto Rico site which functioned as a military training installation:

1) develop approaches and methods to detect and characterize the baseline level of contamination in Vieques;
2) assess human health and ecosystem impacts caused by contaminant exposure in Vieques; and
3) develop innovative approaches to mitigate contamination and enhance remediation at the Site.

RFA open Feb 21, 2019 – April 23, 2019
Feel free to distribute to anyone who may be interested.

National Academies workshop on Single Cell and Single Molecule Analysis Tools Webcast
March 7-8, 2019

This workshop will explore the current status of this rapidly evolving field of study, review the preliminary use of single cell and single molecule analysis tools in environmental health studies, and investigate the resources needed to make the data generated most useful to the biomedical and public health fields and to regulatory decision makers.

Held in Washington D.C. and webcast live, the workshop may include presentations and panel discussions on topics such as:
  • What kinds of environmental health questions or challenges could be explored with single cell and single molecule detection tools and analysis?
  • What does single cell and single molecule analysis enable researchers to do better, for example in terms of precision, accuracy, and speed?
  • What are the key goals to advance or improve single cell and single molecule tools, particularly as they pertain to environmental health research and decision needs?
  • What are the key barriers or limitations to the use of data emerging from the use of single cell and single molecule detection tools, for example in terms standards, comparability across technologies, and the limit of detection uncertainties?
