MAC in a Moment

February 27, 2019
Tired of winter? Here are three ideas for energizing your professional life.

Engage, Grow, Demonstrate Effectiveness

Educator evaluation frameworks invite teachers and administrators to demonstrate how they invest in their own professional learning and contribute to the learning of colleagues and the field. Participation in action research, collaborative inquiry, field tests, and pilots can accomplish both individual professional learning and professional contribution to betterment of the field.

Our profession puts a premium on professional learning because we are, after all, the profession about learning sciences
  • Danielson’s Framework for Teaching dedicates Domain 4: Professional Responsibilities to the importance of continuous learning and of contributing what we are learning to benefit the field.
  • The Five Core Propositions of NBPTS support a coherent set of expectations for teaching professionals – likewise emphasizing systematic learning, reflection, and commitments to students and the field.
  • The Best Evidence Synthesis Iteration draws together bodies of international research evidence to explain what works and why to improve education outcomes and the teaching profession.

Field test MAC's new online courses

MAC’s vision to make Michigan the state of assessment literacy is becoming a reality through action research and development of learning opportunities, resources, and tools that support assessment literate practice and the use of high-quality balanced assessment systems. This month, we are inviting practicing teachers, administrators, and instructional coaches to join the MAC in a job-embedded learning opportunity that will inform your use of assessment and allow you to contribute to the MAC community.

Interested educators are invited to field test one of the MAC’s online assessment courses aligned to Michigan’s Assessment Literacy Standards (2015/2017). Courses are organized by strands, and learning tasks represent select competencies and responsibilities educators encounter in their current context. Field-test participants can choose a course in one of four assessment topics:
  1. Formative Feedback
  2. Purposes of Assessments: Understanding uses and users
  3. Developing Learning Targets
  4. Assessment Design: Using a blueprint
Participants who complete an online course and demonstrate learning are eligible to earn up to 15-20 SCECHs at no cost.

Apply online soon! Online courses open March 14, 2019 and continue through July 15, 2019. Click here to learn more.

Assessment Learning Network (ALN)

Our April 12, 2019 ALN event will welcome Dr. Jill Willis, Senior Lecturer at Queensland (Australia) University of Technology, who will present on the topic of, “Preparing Teachers to Design Classroom Assessment for Learner Agency.” Dr. Willis will provide an international perspective on formative assessment as used by teachers and students daily during instruction and learning. We'll explore together how Michigan might learn from other countries' experiences around formative assessment practice.
