March 2019 Newsletter

From Mr. Phillips, Head of School

As we enter the month of March, we enter one of the busiest months of the school year. We begin the 4th quarter in mid-March, 6th graders will take a trip to Tybee Island, GA; 7th graders will go to Charleston, SC; our Senior class will travel to Kissimmee, FL, for their Senior trip; and Terra Nova testing will take place March 18-22.

Galatians 6:9 tells us not to grow weary or become tired in doing good, for, in the end, we will reap if we do not give up. We can apply that verse to so many areas of our personal lives as well as our walk with Christ and what He has us doing for Him.

I would encourage everyone not to let “Spring fever” kick in. Don’t give up but finish the year strong.

- Mr. Scott Phillips, Head of School

As we look toward summer, Camp Curtis 2019 is just around the corner! This year campers will enjoy up to 8 weeks of nonstop fun as they learn all about science and how God uniquely created everything in the universe. Each week campers will conduct hands on science experiments in the classroom as they learn about topics such as space, earth, animals, and people. Camp will run from May 28 - July 26 and will be set up on a pay-by-week basis. Spots are very limited! Registration for Curtis families will begin in March and open up in April for the general public. Be looking out for an email with registration details.

Elementary School News

Full steam ahead! February 17 – 23 was National Engineer’s Week across the U.S. Here are some of the S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) projects and lessons that our elementary students have been learning during the month of February.

Mrs. Bodie and Mrs. Rhoades’ kindergarten classes recently conducted a unit study on penguins. As a part of their unit, they not only discussed the life-cycle of birds, but they also incorporated a lab involving crayons and cotton balls, which mimic the down feathers of baby penguins.

Mrs. Haywood’s first graders are learning about the creation and purpose of the sun. Genesis tells us that the purpose for these lights in the sky is to separate day from night, to help us mark the passage of time, and to give light to the earth. They learned how God made the greater light to rule the day. Scripture also tells us that His creation is to declare His glory.

Mrs. Coffey’s second graders are learning multiplication solving skills as part of their math curriculum. They are also learning about shadows in relation to the angle of the sun, refraction and reflection, and the prism and how that relates to the colors of the rainbow.

Third grade recently began their “Mini-Society” project which involves applying their math skills to economics. They used their art skills to design city flags, city currency, and campaign posters.

Fourth grade just wrapped up their weather unit involving collecting data over several consecutive days, taking measurements using various weather tools such as anemometers, barometers, and a rain gauge. At the end of the unit, students constructed a “wind turbine” applying their understanding of wind speed to how we can convert wind into renewable energy.

Mrs. Hensley’s fifth graders are working with fractions in math and learning how that affects everything we do on a daily basis. For example, what are the results when we obey God completely or just some (a fraction) of the time?  We are also learning how electricity works in science. What types of materials are good conductors, what is an insulator, different types of circuits, etc.  We are also learning how God can calm any "electrical storm" in our lives and keep us completely safe by providing an "insulator" of some sort.  We are learning what a mighty God we serve!

Mrs. Jones’ Elementary Learning Place students are discovering gems in their math curriculum. They are using manipulatives to deepen their understanding about fractions, decimals, squares, square roots, line segments, metric measurements, and money. Whew! Mrs. Jones’ students are becoming star mathematicians!

Middle & High School News

During these busy school days, we encourage parents to review the school calendar and frequently check Renweb (FACTS) and the school website. The information will be of value to you as you plan the family calendar and remind your student(s) of his/her responsibilities. Should you not find the answer to your specific question on our website, we are just a phone call away at (706) 828-6624.

As we enter the final quarter of the 2018-2019 school year, here is a glimpse into Senior/12th grade life at Curtis. Even though their senior year has been academically demanding and they have had to make many decisions about their futures, the class has still enjoyed the privileges of being seniors. Some have enjoyed reporting to school later in the morning or leaving school early as part of their college/dual enrollment schedule. Others have earned the privilege of being leaders/mentors in various clubs and athletics or as teacher aides in the Elementary School. The class has enjoyed walking to downtown restaurants such as Nacho Mama's and Pizza Joint for lunch once a month. Also once a month, their families have taken turns delivering lunch from Olive Garden, Chick-Fil-A, and more. The Senior class is excited and looking forward to their Senior trip to Kissimmee, FL, later this month. The trip will include a visit to Sea World, Busch Gardens, and other attractions.

Our hope and prayer for “our kids” that we have come to love and appreciate is that they will walk with God into the future that He has planned for them.

- Mr. Larry Ford, Middle and High School Principal
