More Than Just a Pipeline

 Forum to explore
LNG (Liquid Natural Gas), Fracking,
and the Comox Valley connection

February 27, 7 - 9 pm

Is it time for a moratorium on fracking in BC?

On February 27, the public is invited to a forum discussion on why this project involves more than just a pipeline. Five presenters will speak about  “LNG, Fracking, and the Comox Valley Connection.”
  • Smithers resident Micheal Sawyer has spent decades as an environmental consultant in the oil and gas sector in Alberta, and will speak about the upstream effects of LNG projects (including LNG Canada and the Coastal GasLink pipeline slated to supply it), as well as the life-cycle costs to the public of such projects.

    .
  • Richard Wright, Wilps Luutkudziiwus is the Spokesperson from Madii Lii Centre in Gitxsan territory in northern BC.  He will discuss the Indigenous rights context surrounding extractive projects, including issues with current federal and provincial approval processes, and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

  • Well-known journalist and filmmaker Damien Gillis will speak to the impact of fracking (hydraulic fracturing) on land and water.
  • Bernadette and Keith Wyton of the Barkley Sound Alliance will focus on the project’s impact at its end-point at the Kwispaa LNG export facility. They will speak about the protections in place and opposition to the proposal.
The forum is open to all.

February 27th,  7-9 pm
Conference Room of the
Florence Filberg Centre,
411 Anderton Avenue,
Courtenay.

If you can help during the event we could use a few extra hands!  Please reach out to Alice de Wolff at alicedewolff@gmail.com.

It is co-hosted by the Watershed Sentinel magazine, the Council of Canadians - Comox Valley Chapter and the Glasswaters Foundation

Molly Kane takes the helm of the Council of Canadians in 2019.

We are excited to announce the appointment of our ew Executive Director at the national level.  Molly joins the organization in March and is the former executive director of the international social justice organization, Inter Pares.

With new leadership, we enter 2019 grateful for the alliances and support both nationally and here in the Comox Valley and remain passionately committed to struggles for economic and social justice, the protection of the Commons, and democracy.

The Comox Valley Nurses for Health and the Environment (CVNHE) now have a presence on social media!

If you haven't already, please take a moment to like their Facebook page and follow them on Instagram.  If you see something you like, please feel free to share it with your network.

The presentations they made to Comox, Courtenay and Cumberland councils  were well received.  Their first major initiative is the banning of single-use plastic bags in the Comox Valley.

CVNHE would love to see you at the presentation to the CVRD on March 12th  at 4 PM at their office: 550 Comox Rd, Courtenay.

A presentation to Komox First Nations will also be offered at a later date.

Word Activists:

The following media contacts can be emailed and told that we do not want Steelhead LNG in Barkley Sound and we do want a full ban on fracking in BC.  While Steelhead has announced a "pause" on the Kwispaa project, the following media sources continue to support the project.
