Dr. Sally Selden named provost
The president of The Citadel has selected his new second in command. Sally Selden, Ph.D., SPHR, will take over as provost and dean of the college in June.

Selden is in her 18th year at University of Lynchburg (UL) in Virginia where she served in numerous leadership positions.

Innovation Center speaker series receives recognition
U.S. News and World Report has named The Citadel as one of the South's top ten innovative schools. Recently, The Post & Courier published an article about the college and its most innovative programs. The list included the BSB’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Speaker Series which was developed by Dr. James Bezjian.

Faculty & staff serve dinner at the Ronald McDonald House
As part of its community service initiative, several members of the BSB faculty and staff served dinner at the Ronald McDonald House. The menu included “mighty meaty” chili and vegetarian chili.  

The effort was led by Dr. David Shepherd. Other volunteers included: Cindy Bolt; Al and Deb Lovvorn; Kwangsso “Kevin” Lim; Soomin Park and his friend Bongseok Choi; Tracey Sigler; and Deanna Caveny, a friend of Dr. Shepherd.

CJ Walker, a sophomore Business Scholar, pitched his business idea at One Million Cups (1MC) during its February meeting. 1MC is a national organization funded by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.

Volunteering as Management Training
It is truly remarkable what one can learn from “doing grunt work,” those essential tasks that actually make things happen in organizations.  In many situations, particularly with non-profit and charitable entities, volunteers do much of the “grunt work.” Yes, some volunteers serve at the upper levels on boards, committees and as directors of special projects like fundraising, but until one gains considerable experience or status, learning how to lead and manage a complex organization is best done from the bottom up.

I consider volunteering as a self-directed job enrichment process.

*Dr. Michael Barth was featured in an article entitled "Ask the Expert," which was published on the wallethub.com website.

*Dr. Jaye Goosby Smith will be presenting at the Association of American Colleges & Universities’ Diversity, Equity, and Student Success Conference at the end of March in Pittsburgh, PA. Her topic is “Creating Globally Inclusive Classrooms.” 

*Dr. James Bezjian is featured in an article that details
 the research collaboration between the innovation lab and the University of St Andrews.

In December 2018, a Chinese translation of Dr. Richard Ebeling's eBook, "Monetary Central Planning and the State" (2015), was published in a paperback edition by Hainan Publishing House in the People's Republic of China.The book is Dr. Ebeling's effort to increase awareness of the "Austrian" theory of money and the business cycle and the case for private, competitive free banking in a country of 1.3 billion people. 

*BSB graduate, Cameron Brown, is mentioned in an article published in Mother Earth News about the lettuce and other good things grown by cadets in the campus shipping containers. The project is an interdisciplinary STEM activity for our campus. The BSB is recognized as a STEM component, thanks to the work of Dr. Iordanis Karagiannidis and retired professor, Dr. Carl Betterton

*BSB student and Regimental Commander, Sarah Zorn, was featured in the New York Times article, "18 Memorable People We Met Across the Country in 2018."

* Cadets Alexander Davis, Morgan Foulks, and Stephen Alvarez (alternative) attended the National Sales Challenge at William Patterson University in New Jersey. Alexander Davis won the “I’d Hire You” competition at the end of the sales boot camp by having the best answers to interview questions. He also qualified based on his first-round role play for the semi-final role play. 

*Dee Delaney was featured in the Post & Courier for keeping a longtime promise to a school custodian.  Delaney is a BSB graduate who reached the NFL.
