Backstory
About this photo
It's always nice when I can just walk out my door to take photos. Late last Friday night, with a coat of fresh snow, I wandered around the neighborhood taking photos.

Behind the Shot
For the photography nerds
Camera settings: Pentax K-3, Sigma 17-50, f/16, ISO 400, 8s, 17mm
Extra tools: Tripod, remote
In the field: I love fresh fallen snow and how it can brighten up a night, the white snow acting as a giant reflector of light. When I saw the nearly untouched staircase and lists leading to the water tower I knew there was potential (the water tower used to, and supposedly will again, have spot lights on it, which would have helped even more). I framed the photo symmetrically and set the camera to a small aperture, more to create the starburst of light than the depth of field a small aperture provides, though the added depth of field was nice, too. To keep the shutter speed from getting too long, I upped the ISO to 400.
Processing: I played with both color and black and white on this one and settled on black and white as I liked how the snow stood out more and the lights popped. I did increase the overall exposure some, while holding back highlights. Shadows got an additional boost. I decreased blacks and added clarity to add some contrast. Finally, a vignette was added to draw attention to the center of the photo.
