Happy Spring you Tucson Gardeners!!!

Now that the snow has left and the snowbirds are thinking about leaving, it's time to think about your spring garden!!! It's been a good winter season for broccoli and cauliflower and our garden at The Gregory School has produced some State Fair size cabbages too!!! So what's next?

Well, let's cut to the chase: we need some more gardeners!!!

We have these beautiful gardens around town, some of which are not full, shocking as that may seem! We are always open to new ideas and we would especially appreciate your help to attract new folks to fill those gardens. Having more gardeners is good, good, good! It means more folks to hang out with in the garden and share ideas and produce, it means more folks to share the cost of water for the garden, and it brings in needed money for the entire CGT operation. So how can we get more gardeners?? We are particularly interested in social media ideas....Can we use Snapchat, Twitter, or even Facebook to get new gardeners??? Feel free to email me (bplenk@igc.org) with your ideas....or just try them out and see what happens!!! But put on your thinking cap for CGT!!!

Spring is almost here and we are very excited to help facilitate your spring gardening. For those of you who don’t know, Makayla and I are the staff (2 of three employees) that come into the garden to fix your leaks and other irrigation concerns, as well as helping with any other garden tasks we are called to do.
One of the really important jobs we have, as Tucsonans and Desert Dwellers, is to help our gardens use water wisely. On our way to being better stewards of the desert and our gardens, we are getting ready to install two 660 gallon rain tanks at our Chaverim Garden and two 660 gallon tanks at our Presidio Garden. We also have two smaller tanks (250 gallons) that we are hoping to find homes for in our gardens. Send us an email or give us a call if you have experience installing cisterns and would like to volunteer or donate to help us with this project. See you in the gardens!

I have gardened at Chaverim since 2003, muddling along mostly oblivious to the organization that is Community Gardens of Tucson (CGT). Then I joined the Board in January 2018. I discovered that CGTs presence in the Tucson community is 20 gardens across the valley operating with financials of about $60,000/year. This I find frankly amazing. Key factors in making this happen are the service of the volunteer Site Coordinators and the efforts (often Herculean) of Gardens Manager Jessica Paul and her assistant Makayla Williams. I am very clear that the value that I receive from CGT goes beyond what I pay in plot fees.

For 2019 the Board has budgeted a deficit of $3,397.85 on total outlays of $60,564.50 to maintain current services without an increase in plot fees. If this deficit cannot be made-up by fundraising CGT must eat into its cash reserves to meet its own budget.

Would you consider contributing to CGT in some amount within your means? You can do so by making a donation on the CGT website.

Thank you for your support of Community Gardens of Tucson.

Consider making a donation to Community Gardens of Tucson
Community Gardens of Tucson has a proud 35-year history of voluntarism and self-effort that has introduced thousands of Tucsonans to ‘The Joys of Gardening.’ With more means CGT can broaden and deepen its reach. Please consider helping. If you are a gardener, please consider adding the cost of credit card processing fees to your plot payment. And could you perhaps add $5 or $10 or more to your payment? Donations are gratefully appreciated from non-active gardeners, many of whom have generously contributed to CGTs work over the years. Contributions above plot fees may be tax deductible. Please consult your tax advisor for details.
