Lunch and Learn

Thursday, March 14 from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm
Hendersonville Community Co-op meeting room
60 South Charleston Lane Hendersonville, NC

Sunshine Week was first celebrated in 2005 and was started by the American Society of News Editors to educate the public on the importance of open government.  Sunshine Week continues to celebrate access to public information and inform on the dangers of excessive and unnecessary secrecy by our various governmental entities.  In honor of this year’s Sunshine Week, LWVHC Observer Team invites you to a lunch and learn for League members and the general public on open records laws. We’ll get a little background on the topic and hear from a panel of journalists on their experiences and perspectives on obtaining information using these sources today. The panel will include Bill Moss, Editor of Hendersonville Lightning and Angie Newsome, Founder and Executive Director of Carolina Public Press, who is a media sponsor of this event.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch and an inquiring mind!

Listen to the Carolina Public Press interview with Co-president, Rachel Poller and Observer Team Chair, Sandra Mowell regarding this program and the League HERE.  There are 3 interviews in this recording ours is second at about 11 1/2 minutes.

Additional parking is available behind the Self-Help Credit Union next door.  The event is free and open to the public. LWVHC celebrates Diversity, Equity and Inclusion by welcoming all members of our community.

The proposed Voter ID law (SB 824) to implement the Constitutional Amendment passed last November is now available for review and comment. Public comments can be submitted until March 15.  Now is the time to advocate for fair guidelines for student IDs, adequate funding for county Boards of Elections to issue photo IDs, clarification on ambiguous wording in the law, and anything else that concerns you. Even though a recent court ruling declared that this amendment is unconstitutional, it is important to comment on the details of the proposed law.Comments can be submitted through email to Public Comment Portal (also available at the short link: demnc.co/idrules).

They can also be emailed directly to the State BOE at rules@ncsbe.com.

Or you can mail your comments directly to Katelyn Love, Deputy General Counsel, PO Box 27255, Raleigh NC 27611-7255.

The basic details of the law are HERE. Additional information on the law and how to submit public comments can be found at demnc.co/protectvoters.
The National Institute on Civil Discourse invites LWV members to join in a video call with Pearce Godwin, Executive Director of National Conversation Project, as he talks about engaging conservatives in conversation on Thursday March 14th at 3 pm.  Please register here  to join the call (which will also be recorded).  A copy of Godwin's “Field Playbook on Engaging Conservatives” will be sent to those who register.  He’ll share some insights from his nationwide organizing across divides, engage in questions and share more about National Week of Conversation (NWOC - April 5-13th).

Annual Gala Luncheon
June 21, 2019
11:00 am
Grand Ole Hall - Highland Lake Inn

The LWVHC annual meeting, scheduled for Friday, June 21, will include a silent auction and raffle fundraiser.  We’re hoping to get donations that will thrill our members and provide us with additional, vital operating funds to support the League’s advocacy and educational programming.  Will you help?  We’ll need everyone’s support to make this event the success we know it can be.

What you can do: Think about your favorite people and service workers.  Maybe one or more would be willing to donate a service or product.  Consider your favorite salon, massage therapist, theater company, florist, artist, restaurant, country club, winery, art gallery, . . . consider a weekend get-away at your vacation home, or teaching a cooking or art class . . . almost any personal service or gift certificate will do.  We believe if you ask folks you have a personal relationship with, they might be more than willing to contribute something to our cause.

All donors will be recognized in print.

Here’s a form for your use: Donation Form
1) Download, save, and complete on your desktop
2) Hit blue “send” button to send to LWVHC.  If this doesn’t work/open, please attach to an email to silentauction@lwvhcnc.org
