Our portfolio team considers communication to be a key part of our role.  While we spend a lot of time researching the corners of trend equity for our own edification, we believe that sharing our research is an important way of helping educate and create more sustainable allocators.

But communication is a two-way street.  So we try to be on the front lines, holding direct conversations with allocators to understand how they think about building portfolios, what else they are allocating to, and the primary risks they are trying to address.

No strategy exists in isolation and it is important for us to understand context.  Blindly saying, "everyone should own this," is, in our opinion, irresponsible at best.

This frequently leads to a discussion of the three primary ways we see trend equity implemented: within a defensive equity sleeve, as a tactical pivot, and as an alternative.

We discuss this so frequently that when one advisor asked me on Wednesday whether we had a brief piece that summarized the approaches, I said, "of course."

And then when I looked for one to send, I realized that no, we don't.

So this week's research commentary is a light and quick hit on the three ways we typically see trend equity implemented, including the pros and cons of each approach.
