Only a brief Commodores comment this month as mobile access is limited at Durville Island as I’m with a team of three MCC launches heading to Wanganui inlet (West Coast south of Farewell Spit) for an extended cruise.
The recent bathtub race was another popular event and some interesting new technology ensured this year's winner was well ahead of the nearest competitor. The competitive bar has certainly been raised and if this innovation is adopted by participants at the next Birdman event, we may have to put a horsepower or height limit on the competitors!
As you will note from the last Things from Thursday email, the recontinuation of the Yard Restructure General Meeting has been put back to later in April this year. Minutes for the General Meeting of 3rd Febrary will be sent out soon and your committee have been reviewing the yard plans taking into account concerns raised by members at this meeting.
We are investigating alternative yard restructure options which will be presented to members at least 14 days before we continue with the General Meeting. As this is taking some time, we won’t be able to ensure this is delivered before the 17th March so we will advise the new meeting date with the information sent out.
Meanwhile, new yard rates agreed by the committee are being sent out via email. These are already up in the club rooms and will be up on our website very shortly. These rates are effective 1st April 2019 and we are ensuring these are issued in compliance with the Club Rules. Please take a copy of these new rates to review.
We are looking for a Food & Beverage Manager to manage our restaurant and bar services so if anyone knows of someone they believe would suit this role please get them to contact our office with their contact details.
We will be asking members to help with a Club working bee soon, often it’s the same members turning up but we would appreciate as much help as we can. A sausage sizzle will be provided for those helping and we will provide a weather dependant date mid-March, hoping to have this done before the end of April.
The recent southerlies have bought cooler water temperature; we were diving in only 16 degrees at Stephens Island on the 28th February, at least 5 degees C colder than recently experienced, so here’s hoping March brings more settled weather.

A Jazzical End to Summer
 Celebrate the end of a great summer!
On Sunday 24th March 6–8 pm the Mana Cruising Club restaurant will host acclaimed musicians, pianist Kevin Clark and vocalist Fran Barton. The duo plays an entertaining and at times unpredictable range of music, from Ragtime, New Orleans styles, boogie-woogie, jazz interpretations of contemporary pop hits – from swing to Sting, and the humorous side of jazz.
Fran and Kevin first teamed up together in the ‘70s working together at a top fine dining restaurant in Wellington for several years, and then moved on to television and radio work. She will be remembered by many for her sparkling performances on the weekly live to air television show with Brian Edwards.
They have many credits including some fifty television appearances, many radio programmes, and appearances at major jazz festivals in New Zealand.
Kevin Clark is a well-known award-winning jazz pianist, trumpet player, composer and arranger, having won the NZ Music Award Jazz ‘Tui’ twice and his last album ‘Zahara’ was a finalist in 2007. Fran is on Kevin’s CDs as well as on albums featuring her – ‘On Saturday’, ‘Don’t You Feel My Leg’ and ‘The Gentleman is a Dope’.

The committee approved the new Yard Services charge during a special meeting held 24/02/19.
These charges will be online at the Travel Lift page on our website. They will also be available from the office, and on the notice board. They are effective from the 1 st Of April 2019.
Despite some member comments that we are a Club, the Yard is a commercial activity of the Club. The Yard incurs costs like any other and must be managed efficiently. Furthermore, it should not be subsidised by other sources of Club income. Nor should non-members benefit from charges significantly lower than other commercial yards in our area. Club members however should receive preferential charges.
It’s important we get these new charges in place to balance not only operational costs, but to accumulate funds for major depreciation items, and strategic development. We now have a charging formula that is repeatable, reflects commercial non-member yard charges and provides members a significant discount for the use of the Travel Lift and Hardstand.
We have removed the doubling of hardstand charges for November and December and introduced a tiered charge for the hardstand based on days out of the water. The first level being up to 14 days, then 14-28 days and then greater than 28 days. In exceptional circumstances members may apply for relief for extended periods on the hardstand.
The terms and conditions as well as the hints, tips, and guidelines will be updated, and it will be important to read these before you utilise Yard Services.

Peter Feely has recently resigned as the President of Coastguard Mana. There is no doubt that we will miss Peter's pragmatic and energetic leadership, and of course we will attempt to convince him to still be available for those late-night callouts crossing the bar in a fresh nor'wester!
In the short term, and largely thanks to Peter's management of the unit, we can continue to support our community professionally. In the medium term we will invite people to fill Peter's big shoes.
I hope that members of MCC will join with us to thank Peter for his dedication to CG Mana for so many years, and wish him and his family well for the future.
Since we last reported to MCC members in September last year, the unit has conducted three Category 1 Search and Rescue Operations (controlled by NZ Police or the Rescue Co-ordination Centre) that have assisted nine people. We have also conducted 13 ‘Good Samaritan’ tasks that have assisted 31 people and involved 181 volunteer crew hours. We’ve also conducted numerous training activities both on and off the water totalling 725 volunteer crew hours.
John Bass is running a Day Skipper course at MCC between 9 – 16 March.
Please keep safe out there – wear your life jackets, make sure you’re operating within your own limits and experience, check the weather and sea conditions before you depart, maintain a regular schedule of maintenance on your vessel, and always have two forms of communication when you’re at sea.

Dear Fishers,
This email is to let you know about consultation being launched today by Hon Minister Nash on proposals to improve our fisheries management system - ‘Your Fisheries, your say’.
Fisheries New Zealand will be consulting with tangata whenua, stakeholders and the general public from 4 February to 17 March.
This consultation looks at a number of proposals to reshape, improve and modernise how our commercial fisheries operate to support the better and more timely information we are receiving from the roll out of electronic catch and position reporting. It is likely to receive a high degree of interest from those involved in the commercial fishing industry and Māori Treaty Partners, as well as our non-commercial fishers.
We consider that the current commercial fishing rules are unclear, hard to understand and can be open to interpretation, and simplifying these rules would help improve reporting requirements and compliance processes. We also need to look at how we can increase incentives for good fishing practices and innovation in more selective commercial fishing methods and practices.
The consultation seeks feedback on options for:
- Amending the commercial fishing regulations that set out what fish must be landed, and what fish can be legally returned to the sea. This includes options to tighten the rules (so less fish can be legally returned to the sea), or, increase flexibility (so more fish can be legally returned to the sea).
- Reviewing the commercial fishing offences and penalties regime to ensure it’s fair and effective (for example, enabling the issuing of infringement notices for discarding offences).
- Streamlining the decision-making processes for setting catch allowances and changing fishing regulations to be more responsive.
- Some technical fisheries management changes.
We are not consulting on on-board cameras at this stage, and no changes to the commercial fishing regulations will be made immediately. We first want to consider and agree on a number of policy settings that underpin commercial fishing. Feedback from this consultation will help inform conversations on how to improve our monitoring and verification capabilities for commercial fishers. Any options for on-board cameras would be publically consulted on at a later stage.
Officials will be holding a series of public meetings throughout the country in February to outline the details of our consultation proposals. Please encourage anyone with an interest in our fisheries management system to get involved by attending a meeting and making a submission.
