Breaking the Four Barriers for Creativity with Guest Speaker Dave Hutchinson

Feb 26th, 2019

So enough of the snow already! It has been very pretty, and hopefully you have all had a chance to get some wonderful winter pictures. However, I think it is time for spring!

Next Meeting, Feb 26th

We have a very full evening on Tuesday, with a bit of house keeping to catch up on from our snowed-out meeting two weeks ago. After selecting our images for the Crescent Beach Black and White Challenge, we will be welcoming guest speaker Dave Hutchinson. Dave is going to guide us through an introduction to “Breaking the Four Barriers for Creativity” and his own journey becoming a full time nature photographer. Dave is an award winning photographer and a nationally accredited PPOC member living in Sidney, BC on Vancouver Island. He will share his own successes and down falls along his journey to communicate his vision: conservation and awareness of what we have to cherish in our wonderful natural world.

~ See you soon, Judy & Elizabeth

Book Suggestion

The Soul of the Camera, The Photographer's Place in Picture-Making
By David Duchemin
Hardcover $37, Kindle $20,

www.amazon.ca/Soul-Camera-Photographers-Place-Picture-Making/dp/1681982021

In The Soul of the Camera: The Photographer’s Place in Picture-Making, David explores what it means to make better photographs. Illustrated with a collection of beautiful black-and-white images, the book’s essays address topics such as craft, mastery, vision, audience, discipline, story, and authenticity. The Soul of the Camera is a personal and deeply pragmatic book that quietly yet forcefully challenges the idea that our cameras, lenses, and settings are anything more than dumb and mute tools. It is the photographer, not the camera, that can and must learn to make better photographs—photographs that convey our vision, connect with others, and, at their core, contain our humanity. The Soul of the Camera helps us do that.

Cold Weather Camera Tip

by Elizabeth Gray

Some of you may have noticed that the batteries in your camera don’t last nearly as long on cold days. Store your extra batteries as close to your body as possible to keep them warm. On really cold days, try placing a small hand warmer in your pocket next to your extra batteries. This will not only keep the extra batteries warm, but will breath new life into apparently dead ones. Once the used battery has warmed up, you can cycle it back into your camera.

© Lisa Banke Stewart • I also went to the Chinese NY parade in Vancouver. It was a first time event for me. It was hard to concentrate on taking photos with the delicious smells from all the restaurants. Lots of colour to photograph but brrrr it was so cold! Glad I toughed it out long enough to be there when the snow started.
