USA Today's Wolken takes a look at the Ole Miss MBB student-athletes who took a knee on Saturday, reflects back on the day Rebels HC Davis was hired when he said, "We’re going to be a team that respects the flag and national anthem." Wolken's thesis: "It would be instructive, then, for Davis to be able to explain what has changed for him between last March and Saturday, when he stuck up for his players who kneeled. In fact, it would be a major opportunity — both for the Ole Miss community, where the kneeling was controversial in some quarters, and perhaps for the country. After a 2 1/2-year national argument fueled by misplaced patriotism and phony outrage, wouldn’t it be something if a kneeling skeptic like Davis came out publicly and said that after seeing the true face of racism and how it impacted his community, his previous stance was wrong? That suddenly, he now understood what Kaepernick was doing and why it mattered? [...] Ultimately, Ole Miss administrators did the right thing in backing the players. But what is that really worth if the school’s leaders aren’t willing to engage on the real reasons why?" More. (link)
"Basically, we are in the early stages of talking about how we can better integrate the Boosters and our athletic department. My idea is to see how we can bring those two organizations closer together, both from the standpoint of the overall mission of athletics, the prioritization of facilities, the synergy of staff, to make it a more effective organization." That's Florida State Prez Thrasher on a longtime dicey dynamic for athletics leaders in Tallahassee. Thrasher notes how he, FSU AD Coburn & Seminole Boosters CEO & Prez Miller all only have a "shelf life of a few more years," wants to make sure alignment between the two entities is sound for future success. More: "We need to make sure we are doing everything we can do to assure we are on the right track on all that and we are doing all we can with our resources." (link)
SBJ's Ourand has flipped his opinion on how the ACC's linear network will fair, "If you had asked me this one year ago, I would have said it's doomed for failure. […] It’s not going to be the start that SEC Network was, where everybody had to have it when it launched. But it's going to be pretty successful when it launches. You can already see the road map for that." Ourand points to the Altice deal in New York & the national carriage pact with Verizon as signs the outlet is getting solid traction, plus, "The first time that they have like a Clemson football game on there that people can't see, then you'll start to see that ramp up, too." (link)
Sports Illustrated's Dellenger starts his look at the changes to JUCO FB with a note on the father-son duo who have operated JUCOInsider.com since 2015 & have catalogued 5,700 junior college FB student-athletes, 700 of which eventually matriculated to the 'Power 5' ranks. However, Arizona's junior colleges dropping FB is the latest sign the junior college niche of the higher ed industry is under severe pressure. New Garden City (KS) & former Arizona Western HC Minnick also points to the new NCAA Transfer Portal as giving DI student-athletes more optionality, where in the past many would have played juco ball for a year before going back to a DI campus. Long, but good read on the market conditions. (link); More words on the potential renewal of a Texas-Texas A&M FB series comes from USA Today's Schroeder. UT AD Del Conte: "I think it’s important. College football, at its core, we’re running an enterprise that’s based on people’s passion, right? … Athletics is about rivalry games. Can you imagine South Carolina not playing Clemson? Georgia Tech not playing Georgia?" (link)

Athlete Viewpoint Co-Founder & former Bradley AD Cross sits down for AthleticDirectorU with former Penn State Deputy AD/current St. Thomas (MN) (DIII) AD Esten & former Princeton Deputy AD/current UChicago (DIII) AD McDermott on why they both chose to go the DIII route. McDermott: "It wasn't so much about Division I or Division III for me, it was more about the institution and the philosophical fit. […[ As you move through your career, don't short the value of the experiences gained during the journey. Give yourself enough time to really feel comfortable in your skin." Esten: "When searching for an AD job, we wanted to get as close to the institutional mission as possible. […] When you're honest with yourself about what's important to you, you might realize that the answers change over time...especially when you consider what is perceived to be important versus what is really important." As part of his "rumblings" series, John Wall Street reports ACC MBB Tournament organizers have started to liquidate ticket inventory in bulk based on the belief stand-out Duke student-athlete Williamson will not play in the event. (link)
$3.287M is the amount it will cost Nebraska should it make a MBB coaching staff change at the end of the season, $2.52M of which would go to HC Miles in monthly installments of $105K over the next two years. Miles currently makes $2.5M, while his ACs, all of whom are under contract through April 2020, each earn approximately $256K. Sidenote, at the end of February, Nebraska will no longer have any severance payouts on its books, as former FB HC Pelini gets the last of his monthly installments on his $6.4M buyout this month. In FY18 the department listed nearly $13M in severance-related expenses. (link)
More Personnel: Norfolk State names Ohio State SVP for Student Life Adams-Gaston as the school's seventh president. Mid-summer start date. (link); The five finalists for the open Idaho prez spot could visit the Moscow campus as soon as this week, with open forums taking place each of the next two weeks. No names released yet, but I suppose this step has to be completed before an AD search begins. Storbeck/Pimentel and Associates is helping with the search. (link); New details emerge regarding the arrest of former Kansas VB volunteer AC Yee as he has been charged with 15 counts of burglary. Seems he was stealing players undergarments, clothes and other personal items, labeling them and storing in his home.  (link)
Arizona unveiled the new $16.5M Cole and Jeannie Davis Sports Center over the weekend. Inside is an indoor field, weight room, training and video areas and bay door access. Not just for student-athletes, the space will be used during FB season as a "key hospitality and fan experience area on gamedays." Wildcats AD Heeke: "It’s an enormous piece of the puzzle for all of our student athletes, our athletic program, an investment in a facility like this that can service so many. ... It’s also a key element to our football program. Having an indoor practice facility connected to our outdoor, right here in the footprint. The investment in our football program is critically important for success in the future. ... Facilities and investments, just like anything, whether it’s a company or the university in general, investing in what young people want and aspire to be great. Athletes want to see tremendous facilities in investment and commitment. Our football program is at an upward trajectory and couldn’t be more excited about that." The Davis family made the lead gift of $8M for the project, bringing their lifetime giving to Zona to $18M. The link includes pictures. (link)
Maryland Prez Loh says 18 of the 20 recommendations from the first investigation into the passing of late FB student-athlete McNair have been put in place, further, roughly 16 of the 21 from the second probe have also been executed. Loh also notes he's putting together a panel to review overall progress, which will report to the UM System board. (link)
Vanderbilt Baseball dons patriotic uniforms every Sunday of the season as Commodores HC Corbin notes, "There is a reason for doing this, and it’s not just to be different from everyone else. Before we are Vanderbilt, we are U.S. citizens. [...] I want (our players) to value the opportunities that they have both educationally and athletically, and why those situations are made possible for them. Don't take them for granted." This year's Sunday silks are a base olive green with a black "Vanderbilt" across the chest underlined by a red, white & blue strike. Sidenote, I'm always interested in Vandy Baseball student-athletes taking notes during team meetings. How many programs do this? (link)
Also Noticed: Updated MBB comparative rankings. (link): Nike's new commercial focuses on women embracing their dreams. Digital expert Smith: "Nike consistently focuses on their consumer in their spots. The message is clear, timely, relatable, emotional. It doesn’t speak above the consumer. It speaks to them." (link); A digital petition to reinstate Iowa radio broadcaster Dolphin has already gotten more than 21K signatures. (link); Have you seen "trash can man" at the Houston MBB games? A sophomore at UH wheels a trashcan to within the line of sight of opponent FT shooters and as they begin to shoot he pops out of the trashcan and "goes nuts" per Asst. AD for Marketing and Event Presentation Boudwin. (link): Pretty amazing feat accomplished by Arkansas Softball student-athlete Gibson over the weekend. She tied an NCAA record with four HRs in a game, in cycle fashion, which is only the second HR cycle accounted for in D1 history. Oh, and she did it in four innings. (link)
