THE HIGHLIGHTS

The Oscars were last night.

THE BACKGROUND.

Every year, all of America tunes in for the Academy Awards in Los Angeles. Aka one of the entertainment biz’s biggest - and lately, most controversial - events. Hint: over the past couple years, you’ve heard a lot about #OscarsSoWhite - raising concerns about a lack of diversity at the Oscars. Plus there was Kevin Hart - who was set to host before dropping out, leaving the Academy Awards hostless. Scene, set.

THE HAPPENINGS.

#OscarsSoWhite didn’t make a reappearance. As in “Green Book” took home Best Picture, Mahershala Ali and Regina King won for Best Supporting Actor and Actress, “BlacKkKlansman” (and Spike Lee) won for Best Adapted Screenplay, and “Black Panther” took home three big wins. Plus there was Alfonso Cuarón - who won the top prize for directing and cinematography for “Roma.”

THE HAPPENINGS PT 2.

You also saw Lady Gaga win for “Shallow” - and Rami Malek and Olivia Colman win for Best Actor and Actress. Who didn’t win: Bradley Cooper and Glenn Close. Meanwhile, pink is everyone’s new favorite color. Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Maya Rudolph kicked things off. So did Queen - plus Adam Lambert. Awkwafina and John Mulaney were freaking out. So were Mike Myers and Dana Carvey. Melissa McCarthy and Tyree Henry wowed everyone with their costumes. Keegan-Michael Key can fly. Rep John Lewis made an appearance. Periods were a hot topic.

SO…?

As far as diversity goes, this Oscars did a lot better than previous years. TBD on whether this keeps up.

THE ACTION

WORLD: All eyes are on Venezuela. Over the weekend, Juan Guaido - the opposition leader who swore himself in as prez - headed to Venezuela’s border with Colombia to receive humanitarian aid from the US. Along with thousands of people protesting Prez Nicolas Maduro - who sent Venezuela’s military to stop aid from getting through. At least 4 people were reportedly killed after around 60 soldiers defected and the protests turned violent. Now, it looks like Guaido’s set to meet with Vice Prez Mike Pence and multiple Latin American leaders. In other news, Prez Trump is heading to Vietnam. There, he’s expected to meet up with Kim Jong Un and declare an end to the Korean War. Stay tuned.

POLITICS: Everyone is talking about Brexit. ICYMI, the deadline for the UK to divorce the European Union is next month. And the two govs still haven’t worked out a deal. Now, lawmakers apparently want Prime Minister Theresa May to consider pushing back the deadline. Tension, high. Speaking of which, the other day, Prez Trump said ‘I guess tariffs maybe aren’t the greatest ever?’ and extended the deadline for those new tariffs on China to go into effect. This comes as the US and China are reportedly talking things out in an effort to avoid tariffs. Olive branch, accepted. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia just appointed its first female ambassador to the US. Three cheers.

HEALTH: Recently, the World Health Organization announced that a measles epidemic in Madagascar has killed over 900 people. Reminder: back in September, Madagascar was hit with a deadly measles outbreak. Since then, around 68,000 people have become infected. Now, Madagascar’s launching a nationwide campaign in an attempt to eradicate measles. Speaking of which, a French boy is under quarantine after allegedly reintroducing measles to Costa Rica - which has been measles-free for years. And in other news, YouTube is taking ads away for anti-vax video channels.
