Alberta College of Social Workers
The Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW) is celebrating and honouring the profession of Social Work this year March 3 to 9. The theme this year is “Real People. Real Impact.” Partnering with the Canmore Public Library and the National Film Board of Canada, ACSW Area Coordinators will be hosting a viewing of "No Place To Call Home" (2003) by Craig Chivers. It is a 57 minute Cinéma Vérité Documentary that takes an intimate look inside one family’s struggle with poverty. Kay Rice, her partner Karl and 6 children move from town to town in search of affordable housing. Unable to find steady work, the Rices rely on food banks and charity to make ends meet. "I know we're poor, but it's what we are, not who we are," says Kay, as she embarks on a fresh start by fixing up a rundown rental home. When things turn sour with the landlord, Kay fears his veiled threats may mean losing her children and decides to take him to court. In capturing the stark realism of a life with few options, No Place Called Home puts a face on what it means to be poor in Canada. A voluntary discussion will follow. Social Workers from the Bow Valley and interested community members are invited to this free of charge event at Canmore Public Library on Wednesday, March 6 at 6:30-8:30 pm. Cupcakes and hot chocolate will be served.
