We can't say thank you enough!

2019 NCA Soirée was like no other! A wonderful night of fun and elegance! We are grateful for every Soirée committee member, volunteer, sponsor, donator, and attendee!

We are a thriving community and truly greater because of your commitment and generosity! Thank you for being such a blessing to Northside Catholic Academy!

🎨The NCA Soiree 2019 Arts Project Auction was a huge success!

8 of 24 projects met (or well exceeded) the $100 reserve price.  Thank you to everyone for generously bidding on these beautiful projects.  Ms. McCarthy and the kids worked so hard and knowing that their work was appreciated by NCA’s families and friends is very rewarding.  Your contributions will help us to continue growing and enhancing our art program at NCA, including keeping our art classrooms filled with new and interesting art supplies.  There were a small number of projects that did not meet the $100 reserve price.  These items are still available for a limited time for those of you looking to be the proud owner of one of these special masterpieces.

Available projects: Ms. Vargas (Pre-K) Tree Fingerprints, Mrs. Deemant (Pre-K) Tree Fingerprints, Mrs. Woods (Pre-K) Tree Fingerprints, Ms. McDavid (K) Handprints on Canvas, Ms. Jablonska (2nd) Popsicle Stick Cross in Shadowbox, and Mr. Bartlett (7th) Framed Line Drawing Collage.  Images of the art projects, including those that are still available for bidding, can be viewed at the Google drive link below.  If you would like to be in the running to purchase one of these pieces, please contact Megan at ind_cm@yahoo.com for more information.

Projects will be available until 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, if there are no additional bids they will be awarded to the highest bid from the event.

School News & Reminders

📚Be a dino-mite volunteer for the bookfairThe Scholastic Book Fair will be at our school this March! All kindergarten through eighth-grade classes will visit the fair. Look for a message from your teacher with dates and times. Families will have the chance to visit the fair after the 10:00 am, 10:30 am, and 11:30 am masses on Sunday, March 3, and during conferences on Thursday, March 7.

The theme for our Spring 2019 Book Fair is Dino-Mite Bookfair: Stomp, Chomp, and Read! To make it all run, we need some gigantasarous volunteers. (Get those service hours done!) Please check out SchoolSpeak to sign up. Sign up for classroom visits, which requires VIRTUS training, or set up and breakdown, which does not require VIRTUS training. If you have any questions, please email Elizabeth Sobczyk at lizzielou81@hotmail.com.

Profits from the Book Fair are used to buy books for the Primary Campus and Middle School Libraries, and for books and resources for all of the classrooms.

We look forward to seeing all of you either volunteering or shopping!

💙Sincerely,

The Book Fair Committee

Laura Kollar, Angie Morrow, and Elizabeth Sobczyk

Speak Up’s 7-Week Course:How Do We Talk With Our Children About Race? Children are internalizing implicit messages about race every day. Research shows that children adopt society’s harmful racial biases even when their parents and teachers don’t share those biases. Talking with children explicitly about race and racism is the only thing that has been proven to interrupt problematic comprehensive racial learning experiences. In our 7-week workshop series, participants reflect on their own experiences, explore the research on race and children, deepen their analysis of systemic racism, role play meaningful responses to challenging situations, and learn about developmentally appropriate resources for teaching and raising anti-racist children.

Each session is typically run by two facilitators with a strong professional background in development, education, and anti-racism. Usually, we pair one white facilitator and one person of color facilitator. Facilitators include Megan Brand, MS Ed, NBCT, Michele Herro, M Ed, Brit Holmberg, MSW, LCSW, Marion Malcome, MSW, LCSW, Rahul Sharma, Psy. D., and Christina Woods, M Ed.

Sundays, 3:30-6:00, beginning 2/24, at Peirce Elementary

Important Change to Guardian Angel Scholarship Application (GASF): For the 2019-2020 academic year, NCA has moved to a new independent review company.  We are moving from Smart Aid to FACTS Grant and Aid Assessment. FACTS maintains a larger client base and possesses greater reporting information which will allow the NCA Scholarship Review Team to better access
the family’s needs and make scholarship awards which meet the needs of the families and NCA.  If you believe your family will require financial assistance our FACTS online application will be available as of February 1, 2019.  We estimate that you will receive notice of your tax credit scholarship in the coming weeks.  The attached link will get you to the site to start your application, https://online.factsmgt.com/signin/42B45   The online version allows all documents to be electronically uploaded directly into your application. Please see attachment for more details.
The deadline for consideration of the Guardian Angel Fund is May 1, 2019

Need for Recess Volunteers: NCA is looking for parents to volunteer and earns service hours to assist our teachers in supervising outdoor and indoor recess for Grades 1 - 4. We have these volunteer times listed on SchoolSpeak. This does require parents to be Virtus trained. I am hopeful we can find parents who are open to assisting us. Thank you.

Dear Parents and Families:

Reading for pleasure unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are. Here’s what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love

for reading:

  • Set the example. Let children see you read.
  •  Have a collection of books in your home. Update this collection routinely to keep up with changing tastes and reading skills.
  •  Support our school’s Book Fair. Allow your children to choose their own books to read.

Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings the books kids want to read right into our school. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.

Book Fair dates: March 3-7

Shopping hours: Class visits March 4-6, open to the public Sunday, March 2 from 11-1 and Thursday, March 7 during conferences

If you are unable to attend the Fair in person, we invite you to visit our online Book Fair at scholastic.com/fair. Our Online Fair is available from March 1 to March 16.

We look forward to seeing you and your family at our Book Fair! Remember, all purchases benefit our school.

Sincerely,

Principal Huzenis

🌴8th-grade room 31 made a “Giving Tree.” On each apple are words of kindness that can be picked and shared as a random act of kindness.🍀🍃🌞💙⛪️💫
In celebration of Random Acts Of Kindness Week, Room 14 has decorated their door with handwritten notes about how they have been kind towards others. 💙⛪️💙⛪️🌟💥
💥All of our 4th-8th-grade students attended the Power of One assembly about bullying. They learned that bullying is often defined as hurtful, purposeful, and repeated actions. They were informed that the different types of bullying are physical, verbal, cyber, and social exclusion.

💥Our students were coached on how not to be a bystander, but how to be an upstander through role play that taught them how to immediately report wrong and cruel behavior to authorities. They were also directed on how to distract, diffuse, encourage, support, and follow up with the bully and the person who was bullied. They were trained on how they should try to understand bullies and not isolate them. They took the Bully Prevention Oath and were motivated to have courage, and understand their power to turn any bullying situation around.
📖In celebration of African American History Month, NCA Students have been learning and writing about the lives and impact of various African-American historical figures. They've also been learning and discussing the injustices they encountered in the past and present day. ⛪️💫

💙⛪️ Our 3rd-grade students engineered, designed, and built carts. They also made adjustments to try to maximize the distance their cart could travel.

🚗Who has the most effective design?!
