KMEA Member Named
Music Education Innovator by
The Give-A-Note Foundation
Michelle Lewis was named a Music Education Innovator by the Give-A-Note Foundation in December 2018.  Lewis was one of 5 teachers selected nationwide.  The Music Education Innovator Award "recognizes teachers who have developed creative, effective in-classroom programs and provides ongoing support to encourage lasting change within a school or district." Lewis teaches at Bloom Elementary in Jefferson County.

“Students learn about real world problems and use music as the avenue to advocate for those in need. For example, (my) 2nd graders made a music video public service announcement for clean water, 5th graders developed a podcast where they teach mini music lessons to those around the world who don’t have a music teacher [and] 1st graders create music that advocates for animals…trying to escape forest fires.”

Read about Lewis's work in a December profile in the Courier Journal.

March is Music In Our Schools Month

Music In Our Schools Month® (MIOSM™) takes a new tack this year, focusing on lessons for first-graders that help them learn elements of music through some classic children’s songs in English and Spanish. The lessons and songs, however, can be shared at many levels. All are available without charge to teachers for their use during MIOSM and beyond.

Ways to Celebrate Music in our Schools Month in Your School
By Elizabeth Caldwell (via NAfME)
Music In Our Schools Month® (MIOSMTM) is a wonderful opportunity to generate buzz for the music program, get everyone in the community thinking and talking about the many different wonderful ways to enjoy music in all its forms, and—most importantly—draw attention to the important role that quality music education plays in every student’s schooling.  More

Make it Stick: Implement Rehearsal Routines
By Lori Schwartz Reichl (via NAfME)
The first fourteen years of my teaching career occurred during the time of my life when I was not a mother. However, during these childless years, I treated the students in my care as though they were my family. I concentrated my daily energy on connecting with my students, managing a successful classroom, and instilling efficient rehearsal routines. The musical outcome of my ensembles proved that the daily routines I implemented were effective in developing musicianship and building high quality programs.  More

Carolyn Bennett is the First Music Educator Teacher-in-Residence at the Library of Congress

By Lisa Ferber (via NAfME)
Carolyn Bennett of North Stonington, Connecticut, fell in love with music from the start. Her grandfather, a professional pianist, gave her a piano when she was about four years old. “One of my earliest memories is sitting in my car seat, moving my fingers in a particular pattern and trying to predict what that would sound like on the piano. I couldn’t wait to unbuckle my car seat and try it out,” she says.  More
