ABC 91: Workism

To work is to live?

I'm sending out this week's ABC a day late because of the Oscars, but it's fitting for it to arrive on a Monday. It's about work.

Derek Thompson makes a thoughtful case for The Atlantic that the decline of traditional faith in America is correlated with an explosion of new atheisms, including work as religion.

We can all relate to the expectation that work should not only be the source of our income, but the source our identity, meaning, and community too.

Though I relate to the problem of fastening our lives to our livelihoods, I'm also sympathetic to the counterargument. Teddy Roosevelt famously said, "Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing."

If how we spend our days is how we spend our lives, shouldn't our workdays reflect our values?

Like the burnout piece a few weeks back, this article seems to have struck a societal chord. After reading it, I'm still torn.

What do you think: Is it problematic that so many of us are looking to our jobs to give us meaning? Excited to hear your thoughts!

Here's the piece: Workism Is Making Americans Miserable.

Warmly,
Simo

P.S. The song of the week is a nice instrumental track to put on in the background and contemplate what it all means.
