Leadership Update
February 25, 2019
Aubrey Coffey-Urban, Programs Manager

This week, we had our second, very successful, Volunteer Orientation! We had a great turnout and all of our priority leaders spoke wonderfully about their projects. Kudos to Keith Bujak, our Volunteer Management Director, for putting on such a great event. Thank you to everyone who came out to meet with us and tell us what you’re interested in. We enjoyed talking to all of you and we hope to see you in the future. For those who didn’t get to come this time and want to come check us out, watch for our next orientation in April!

Later this week, we’ll have a special planting at North Mountain for the Green Biz Conference. In partnership with the City of Phoenix, American Forests, and Microsoft, we will be planting 75 native trees and plants along the Penny Howe Trail with the help of about 40 GreenBiz Conference attendees. Below are some before pics of the area we will be helping to restore with this planting. Stay tuned for the after pics in further updates, or feel free to go out and check out our work for yourself the next time you’re out enjoying North Mountain. A big thank you to Kelsey McKeighan, AZSA’s Adopt-A-Park Priority Lead, for planning this planting!

Water Resources Management – Weekly Update – February 25, 2019
by Aubrey Coffey-Urban

Volunteer Opportunity!

The City of Gilbert is looking for volunteers! On March 6 and 7, the City is holding a Water Festival, an educational day on science and stewardship and they need volunteers to make this event work. There is a training on February 28 for volunteers, so if you are interested in helping, please sign up with them ASAP! This is a great way to get involved in a community event and help educate your friends and neighbors, and even yourself, on water resources. You can sign up to volunteer here.

Urban Forestry – Weekly Update – February 25, 2019

by Aubrey Coffey-Urban

Our Urban Forestry team has been hard at work planning a tree planting in Apache Junction for this fall. Originally, the City asked us to plant 100 trees! Instead of trying to do them all at once, however, we have decided to do several plantings in stages. This fall, we’ll start with 20-25 trees in one of the medians and based on that experience, decide when/how the rest of the trees will be planted in the coming years.

We have also been very busy engaging with potential partners and funders for our ALPHA Nursery project. It’s been a long project development, but we are still making progress. All of our conversations with various potential partners have really added a lot of depth to our original project design and we are excited about the direction we’re heading in!

If you are interested in working on any of these projects, please contact Paul Tesarak or Brett Baker, our Urban Forestry Priority co-leads.

Sow It Forward: Vertical Garden Project- We ordered the second round of tower gardens this week to be installed in The Fowler Elementary School District in March. This will put a total of 15 gardens in the district! There will be a lot of volunteer opportunities coming up in the next couple months, so please contact me if you are interested in helping!

Food Tech For The Future: Growing Digital Farmers- We began lessons with the Science Club at Glendale High School on Feb. 12 and will start building a food computer with them in March. Our team has already built one computer that we will bring to the school to use as a model, and donate to the Science Club to use for experimentation. We are so excited to be piloting our food computer program at Glendale High School and will be sure to share pictures in future updates.

Help-A-Farm- We unfortunately had to cancel our Agritopia event on Sunday due to the rain. But they have rescheduled with us in March, meaning we will have two events next month:
March 17: The Farm at Agritopia
March 24: The Farm at South Mountain
If you are interested in helping at either of these events, please contact gabrielle.pettit@azsustainabilityalliance.com
