WIIT Hosts Trade Talk on Trade Tools at Dechert

The March 5 Trade Talk panel centered on the legislative, regulatory and enforcement developments in 2018 and thus far in 2019 in sanctions and export controls.  The speakers included top officials from the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and the Department of Commerce Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) as well as leading international trade lawyers from Dechert and Arent Fox.

Sara Thannhauser, OFAC’s Deputy Assistant Director for Policy, highlighted OFAC’s focus on significant financial actors in order to maximize the actual impact of the agency’s enforcement actions and the importance of robust compliance commitments for the private sector actors.  Eileen Albanese, Director of the Office of National Security and Technology Transfer Controls (NSTTC) at BIS, discussed the ongoing rulemaking process for “emerging technologies” and the expected process for “foundational technologies.”  Kay Georgi and Sean Kane added insight from a practitioner’s perspective, speaking to the nexus between new and old trade authorities and trade tools, global competition and national security.

The panelist remarks were followed by a lively Q&A session with the audience, who came from government agencies, embassies, industry, trade association, law firms and other professional service firms.
CT Strategies Hosts WIIT's Talk with Karen James Chopra

On March 1 WIIT hosted career counsellor Karen James Chopra for a talk on “Taking charge of your career from an internship to the C-Suite” at the offices of CT-Strategies. Karen provided helpful tips on how to navigate work challenges and seize opportunities in order to build a successful career for oneself. She highlighted the importance of taking time to build networks both within and outside one’s immediate work environment and leveraging these networks towards securing future job prospects.

In what was an interactive and engaging discussion, attendees shared their own experiences on a range of issues from using networks to secure the desired job, effective time management skills and handling challenging colleagues and work environments.  Karen also addressed a number of questions on salary negotiations and effective use of social media to further one’s career. For individual needs Karen can be reached at Karen@ChopraCareers.com.
WIIT and CLA Hold Tariff Panel at CBP Office
On February 27, the Customs, Logistics & Transportation programming section of WIIT held a lunchtime panel on the topic of “Navigating the Future: Tariff Implications of the Trade War on U.S. Manufacturers”. This event was organized in partnership with the Customs Lawyers Association (CLA).

The three panelists – Allyson Mattanah, Chief of the Chemicals, Petroleum, Metals & Miscellaneous Classification Branch at the CBP Office of Trade; Yuri Unno, Director for International Trade Policy, Government & Industry Affairs at Toyota Motor North America; and Nicole Vasilaros, SVP of Government & Legal Affairs at the National Marine Manufacturers Association – each shared how the Section 301 and 232 tariffs impacted their day-to-day operations, and shared their perspective on the long-term repercussions.

With WIIT and CLA participants representing a range of interested government, private-sector, and trade association stakeholders, the discussion with the panelists on this top-of-mind issue was lively and insightful.

Trust Tidbit

Hard to believe, but its almost the end of this “year” of the Trust.  It really is true that time flies when one is having fun:  the Silent Auction was a success, the scholarship prompt has been revamped, and Trade 101 is in the works.  Now all we need is YOU and your enthusiastic support to take us into next “year”.  We would love to hear from WIIT members who would like to join the Trust Team and help us move forward.  All ideas welcome, no outrageous time commitment, just a fun little group with whom to work.

If you would like more information or want to get more involved with the trust please email Kathi Lunardi: klunardi@usasan.org.

Self Confidence is one of the hardest things to achieve, especially for women. WIIT is sharing inspirational musings by women leaders to combat this and help women be less ambivalent to LEAN IN and get to the top!

“Cherish forever what makes you unique, cuz you’re really a yawn if it goes."
