Irene Miller, a Holocaust survivor, author, speaker, and educator will take you on a survival journey of which little is written and known about.  You will sleep in the winter under an open sky on the no man's land; you will freeze in a Siberian labor camp where the bears come to your door front.  In Uzbekistan, you will live on boiled grass or boiled onions, and shiver with malaria.  You will spend years in orphanages.  When this is over you will wonder how a child with this background grows up to become a positive, creative, accomplished woman with a joy of living and a love to share.  Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Next time you stop by the library to get something to read, consider bringing something along to help those in need as well.

Now through April 30, all Warren Public Library locations will be collecting donations of nonperishable food items as part of the Food for Thought campaign, a regional effort between local libraries and Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeast Michigan.  Food banks see a decrease in inventory during the winter and early spring, so donations are needed to help feed hungry children, seniors, and families in your community.  To take part, bring in nonperishable food items and place them in donation boxes inside the library.  For more information, call 586.574.4564.

Alzheimer's Kits Now Available at the Warren Public Library

Thanks to a generous grant (The Mary J. Ritter Literacy Award) from the Metro Detroit Book and Author Society, the Warren Public Library was able to purchase materials to create ten additional Alzheimer's Kits.  The library previously had two kits funded by Beaumont Hospital.

The kits, which can be checked out for three weeks, are designed to give in-home or visiting caregivers an easy way to bring a variety of activities on the go for those suffering from the debilitating effects of Alzheimer's Disease.  Studies have shown these activities can help increase concentration and focus, lower levels of irritability, foster socialization, stimulate the senses, and increase self-worth through problem-solving and the overcoming of obstacles.

The materials in the various kits include four and twenty piece jigsaw puzzles which are calming and aid short-term memory; word search puzzles which emphasize pattern recognition, a key cognitive tool; coloring books which improve focus, spur creativity, and sooth anxiety and stress disorders; language cards which foster conversation through memory recall; relaxing DVDs of animals and artwork; gel wave pads which can be heated or cooled to help alleviate pain and aid in tactile therapy; and playable art balls which are an excellent fidget toy and aid in manual dexterity.

Alzheimer's Kits are available at all four of our library branches.
