ABC 92: Recycling

Dumpster Dive

If you ever wanna see someone caught in a moment of existential dread, watch them approach a waste bin. It's impossible not to feel a pang of imposter syndrome when deciding whether to throw, say, a soiled pizza box in the trash, recycling, or compost.

Here's a secret: It might not matter much.

For years, the US has shipped its recycling to China, where low-paid workers sort our plastics and convert them into shoes, bags, and Happy Meal toys. Last year, China started restricting imports on recyclables. Now, the US doesn't know what to do. Some counties don't have the heart to tell their citizens and are just bringing their recyclables to the dump...

Recycling used to resolve some cognitive dissonance for the bumper-sticker environmentalist with an Amazon Prime account. But now that the truth is out, maybe we'll be forced to address the root of the problem: overconsumption.

I love how 1,000 well-written words can change my mind about something I held true for my entire life. Hope you'll take the time to give this a read.

Here's the piece: Is this the end of recycling?

Warmly,
Simo

P.S. Anderson .Paak has one of those voices that seems to fit any mood. Throw on this track and let it give you what you need. Here's the full songs of the week playlist.
