"The people must know before they can act, and there is no educator to compare with the press."
 Ida B. Wells

Ida Bell Wells-Barnett, more commonly known as Ida B. Wells, was an African-American investigative journalist, educator, and an early leader in the Civil Rights Movement. She was one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

How the Daughters and Granddaughters of Former Slaves Secured Voting Rights for All

2020 is the centennial year for passage of the 19th Amendment.  The story of the struggle for women’s suffrage is complex: remarkable but also troubling when we examine the treatment of African-American women.  Often overlooked, the story of the struggle by African-American women is rich and inspiring.   To get you started, please read Historian Martha S. Jones's examination of race versus gender in the quest for universal suffrage @NPG #BecauseOfHerStory

March 26th -  The Supreme Court case, "League of Women Voters vs. Rucho" on fair districts, will be heard in Washington, DC! There will be a rally in Pack Square Park at 11:30 am with a press conference at noon. Here is a Facebook link with more information. (This is a time change from previous publicity!)

SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR GREENWAYS AT THE HISTORIC COURT HOUSE AT 5:30 ON APRIL 1. That is when the Henderson County Board of Commissioners will review the County’s draft Greenway Master Plan.  The 30-year plan proposes 70 miles of inter-connected trails throughout the county.   Its approval would enable Conserving Carolina to work with the County to get the easements required to start trail construction.  An approved Master Plan will also facilitate grant applications and other fund-raising efforts to help finance trail construction. Speakers in support of the plan have been arranged.  However, a large cheering section will help assure a positive outcome.  IF YOU WANT MORE GREENWAYS, BE THERE!

Annual Gala Luncheon
June 21, 2019
11:00 am
Grand Ole Hall - Highland Lake Inn

The LWVHC annual meeting, scheduled for Friday, June 21, will include a silent auction and raffle fundraiser.  We’re hoping to get donations that will thrill our members and provide us with additional, vital operating funds to support the League’s advocacy and educational programming.  Will you help?  We’ll need everyone’s support to make this event the success we know it can be.

What you can do: Think about your favorite people and service workers.  Maybe one or more would be willing to donate a service or product.  Consider your favorite salon, massage therapist, theater company, florist, artist, restaurant, country club, winery, art gallery, . . . consider a weekend get-away at your vacation home, or teaching a cooking or art class . . . almost any personal service or gift certificate will do.  We believe if you ask folks you have a personal relationship with, they might be more than willing to contribute something to our cause.

All donors will be recognized in print.

Here is a form for you to use: Click Here

The easiest and fastest way to get the donation information to the right place is to call Susan Senko at 828-891-8087. She will record the information for you.  If you prefer, you can submit the information by emailing it to silentauction@lwvhcnc.org.
If you have any questions about the auction or the form, please contact Susan.
