CBSSports.com's Dodd reviews Judge Wilken's ruling in the Alston case. Dodd: "Buried in the injunction is Wilken retaining jurisdiction. In essence, any violation of the order will go through her. Typically, courts walk away after such decisions. […] What Wilken's decision doesn't make clear in her 104-page opinion is what accomplishments 'tethered' to education could be rewarded. One conference official questioned whether making the dean's list -- or just attending class -- could be rewarded." Historical Basketball League CEO Volante: "Judge Wilken wrote over 100 pages detailing all of the harms caused by the con of amateurism. Yet in her ruling, on the last few pages, she chose to leave almost all of that harm in place. She actively worried that the six- and seven-figure salaried athletic directors and commissioners who run these college sports leagues might make 'miscalculations' and overpay their athletes." (link); Washington Post sports & media reporter Strauss: "Over the last several years, the NCAA has emerged intact after a wave of legal challenges (union, O'Bannon, Alston). Next it faces market competition (G League, HBL, Yee's startup, XFL). And always lurking is the possibility, however unlikely, of a player strike." (link)
LSU MBB student-athlete Smart was held out of last night's tip against Vanderbilt on the explanation of "only in an abundance of caution and as a result of the lack of clarity provided regarding media reports and reported wiretaps involving Head Coach Will Wade." The Tigers also noted Smart & his family have been completely cooperative. Smart participated in cutting down the nets with the program's SEC title. Acting HC Benford says Smart will be out until the investigation is complete, but mentioned he hopes Smart is back as soon as this coming Tuesday. (link, link, link); Also from Baton Rouge, LSU fans took some of their frustration out on Tigers AD Alleva, Chants of "Joe must go" could be heard & multiple fan signs contained negative messages toward Alleva. (link)
Arizona MBB dropped its home finale to rival Arizona State & afterwards embattled Wildcats HC Miller grabbed the mic in the McKale Center to deliver a message, "There’s no place that’s more magic than the McKale Center. There are no fans that are more loyal. It has been an amazing honor to coach on McKale Center for the last 10 years. Thank you for everything." Naturally, the comment led to speculation that Miller had coached his last game in the building, but in the post-game presser he declined to comment further. (link); TCU HC Dixon on the suspension of AC Barker in connection to MBB-FBI reports, "I'm shocked. We'll see where it goes. He's definitely a good person, a good man, a good family man. The guys were upset because he means a lot to them, & I was upset as well. That's all I can say." (link)
If you have a spare hour-plus today, which maybe you do on a Sunday, here's some podcast gold as notable entrepreneur Ferriss & best-selling business author Collins go in depth on a variety of organizational performance topics. Level 5 leadership, how Collins tracks his time & sleep, the need for copious amounts of uninterrupted "creative" time, the importance of "who luck," how to ensure opportunities spent with mentors are valuable for both parties, Good to Great's flywheel model, why having a safety net option is really no option at all. Lots more. Pretty much a must listen. (link)

UMKC AD Martin has more on his plate as he's added the title & responsibilities of Executive in Residence in the university's School of Education. What does it entail? "Strategic development and growth, teach various sports management courses and advise students in the program, assisting in the development, coordination and implementation of experiential learning opportunities for students, manage and develop contacts and relationships for the program with partner sports organizations in the Kansas City Region." (link)
More Personnel: Reports indicate Morehead State MBB HC Todd will assume the same role at Eastern Kentucky. (link); Interesting tidbit from the USA Today's Berkowitz: North Carolina and Virginia will share the ACC MBB regular season title, but neither coach's contract calls for a regular season conference championship bonus, the only 'Power 5' conference to have this scenario this season. LSU clinched the SEC Title but indefinitely suspended MBB HC Wade's $50K bonus for the achievement is "contractually held up" in light of said suspension. Michigan State MBB HC Izzo gets a $50K bonus for a share of the Big Ten regular season title while Purdue boss Painter gets $47,500 for the same feat. Kansas State MBB HC Weber up to $400K in bonuses this year with the $100K he gets for the Wildcats sharing the Big 12 regular season title, compared to Texas Tech leader Beard who will see an extra $150K. Georgia State's Sun Belt regular season title earns MBB HC Hunter $25K. Murray State's MBB Ohio Valley Conference Tournament title gives HC McMahon a $15K bonus. Lots more "win milestone" bonuses noted, as well. (link); United States Air Force Secretary Wilson selected as the next president at UTEP. (link)
We've cliff-noted two of the most notable conversations from last weekend's MIT Sloan Analytics Conference & will knock out a couple of more in the next day or two. Here's Washington State FB HC Leach's convo with notable author Lewis. Leach on why he doesn't care about credit of helping to develop the Air Raid system, "because if you’re constantly chasing the credit part you don’t have time to worry about improving." Also, the in-depth discussion between NBA Commish Silver & The Ringer's Simmons that's been talked about a bunch over the past week. Silver with a number of interesting points on how elite hoopers grow up in the modern age of social media, "Anywhere they go they don't know if they're being filmed or if somebody's tweeting about them." Further, Silver believes his league has a responsibility to help address mental health challenges in the game. More. (link)
In a change of pace for Kansas State FB, new Wildcats HC Klieman won't host a spring game. Instead, a three-hour "interactive practice" will give fans a chance to see the team up close & personal. Klieman: "Kansas State is not on the schedule. So we have to do a great job of protecting each other. […] Spring ball has evolved so much over the last 10 years, whether that is your numbers, amount of injuries and so on and so forth. The worst thing you could have as a coach is have a guy get injured in the spring and then miss a significant amount in the fall." (link)
In an effort to highlight the differences in charter plane accommodations for hoops programs, the Spokesman-Review's Curley details Gonzaga's 30-seat, no frills Dornier 328JET. Comparatively, Curley recalls a Sports Illustrated article from 10 years ago that revealed the Kansas MBB team had as in-flight snacks cheese cut into the shape of the school mascot and that the Jayhawks' plane was a 737 jet with 76 all first-class seats. Both of the Bulldogs MBB and WBB teams charter to every game, a rarity that is justified by not wanting student-athletes to miss any more classtime than necessary, and as WBB HC Fortier points out: "It’s a team-bonding experience. There’s only us. Just those 30 seats. It’s basically just our players and our coaches. It brings you together as team." (link)
Sports TV scheduling expert Sarziniak goes in on why WarnerMedia/Turner & the Mountain West could make a good couple. "The Mountain West hasn't been thrilled about some of the slotting of their games, specifically in the areas of start times. Meanwhile, the linear TV channels of TNT, TBS and TruTV have a decently open canvas on weekends for live sports.  I believe the channels also have enough subscribers to support any requirements Boise St. home football games would have as they have a slightly separate deal for themselves. […] Regional games on AT&T Sports & Spectrum Sports PPV could stay & use B/R Live out of market, assuming there is some location services component to protect the in-market rights.  Maybe leverage Audience Network for some additional carriage of those games on DirecTV & AT&T UVerse or partner up with AT&T's telecom resources." (link)
Also Noticed: West Virginia MBB HC Huggins is one of the most notable HCs who has drastically changed his sideline wardrobe over the years. Southern Miss MBB HC Sadler wore a suit for senior day photos, but changed back into his t-shirt and slacks for the game, an in-game look he has worn consistently since January 24. Literally a long sleeve t-shirt. (link); The MAAC Tournaments make their last appearance in Albany this week before heading to Atlantic City, a move that will lose the Capital Region $2.7M in direct sales according to Discover Albany Prez/CEO Delaney. (link); The Ball State student who stepped over the line, but drained a half court shot earlier this season will get the $10K prize money after all, as AD Goetz made sure it would happen, even when the insurance company denied the prize. (link); Interesting read from the Wall Street Journal on the rewards of "not yielding to campus radicals," as shown by Wyoming not caving to faculty opposition to the school's new slogan: "The world needs more Cowboys." Based on digital media numbers surrounding the slogan, officials expect applications and enrollment to both trend upwards. (link); Texas parts ways with former QB Young from his part-time job as a development officer for "not demonstrating significant and sustained improvement in the performance of (his) job responsibilities and failing to maintain standards of conduct suitable and acceptable to the university." Young had been given job warnings since 2017. (link)
