March 2019

The attacks on the Muslim community in Christchurch were a solemn reminder of the importance of UNESCO's messages of mutual understanding, intercultural dialogue - and ultimately, peace. We stand in solidarity against these attacks and with the families and communities of those who lost their lives.

Below is an overview of our March activities.

Introducing our new youth leaders

We’ve appointed five outstanding new UNESCO Aotearoa Youth Leaders. Please welcome (listed in alphabetical order) Liletina Vaka, Māia Tapsell, Morgan King, Nick Mailau and Shahin Najak (pictured).

Online GCED map

Amazing Global Citizenship Education (GCED) projects are happening all around Aotearoa! We’ve created an online map to share projects and inspire others. Please email our advisor Gracielli Ghizzi-Hall if you'd like your GCED project to be on our map – and please share the map with anyone you think might be interested.

Taiātea – Gathering of Oceans forum

Earlier in March, in partnership with Ngāti Kuri and thanks to a UNESCO Contestable Activity Fund (UCAF) grant from the National Commission, Auckland War Memorial Museum hosted the marine conservation forum Taiātea – Gathering of Oceans.

Kauri wānanga at Waipoua

‘Kauri ki Uta, Kauri ki Tai: The Kauri Project Wānanga’ was held at Waipoua in March, with the support of the National Commission and the Kauri Dieback Programme. The wānanga brought together a diverse group of practitioners and community leaders across disciplines of art, science and mātauranga Māori.

International refugee meeting

Back in December Abdirizak Abdi, Lead Adviser Refugee and Migrant Education Support at the Ministry of Education (pictured), attended UNESCO’s International Expert Meeting on Public Policies Supporting the Right to Education of Refugees in Barcelona. He reports back on the meeting.
