Your Vital Updates from
Tasman Bay Chiropractic
Welcome to the Autumn 2019 edition of our quarterly newsletter. As we were planning this edition, autumn seemed quite some time away, but it seems to have suddenly arrived and the days of living with worsening drought are fading into the past quite quickly.
We launched the new year with our 'Jumping into 2019' theme. Team members set and shared their goals and we thoroughly enjoyed seeing a number of our clients join in with the theme and also set and achieve some great goals.
We are excited about our next theme - 'Let's talk sport at TBC'. Our team members all exercise regularly and have in the past or still do play regular sport.
We know that a significant number of you are very passionate about your sport and exercise programmes and are already discussing this with your chiropractor. For those of you who would like to know more about research into sport and chiropractic, Hamish has written a wee taster below and is happy to discuss this further with you. If anyone would like to know more about sport and chiropractic research, do be in touch and let us know.

TBC is also currently involved in supporting sport in a number of ways. So let's celebrate sport for the next while!

It is with sadness that we report that this is Deb's last article in our newsletter, but we all wish her well for her next life adventure.

Up-to-date news is featured on our website and/or Facebook page as well as on the noticeboard in the practice. Take a look regularly to see the fun, competitions, winners and information.

With very best wishes

Corrian, Hamish, Debbie, Bronwyn, Lynley and Victoria

Upcoming Winter Sport Season

I am very passionate about improving and maintaining my clients' sports performance from a very young age -  all the way until they have gone as far as they can go. As a passionate sportsman, I have seen first-hand the differences in my sporting performance when being regularly adjusted by my chiropractor, versus being in a state of dysfunction - and it's usually the little things that can make all the difference in the game.

After the last few months of focused training and diet regime I have noticed a marked improvement in my vertical jump, which has improved my attacking abilities on the volleyball court. Noticing this I decided to do some research into how chiropractic care can affect sports performance and what it might be able to do for me and you lovely people who enjoy chiropractic care here at Tasman Bay Chiropractic.

The wear and tear of everyday life can cause spinal segments to move in a way that is different from 'normal'. Everyday strains can interrupt the flow of information between the brain and the body - either these messages are not delivered at all, or they may be inaccurate. Chiropractic care is about total health and wellbeing, it's about people achieving their optimal potential. Our bar can be set quite low however, if our spine and our nervous system are not functioning as they should, interfering with our ability to raise that bar. For many people, chiropractic care is a great way of recovering from injury or reducing pain levels so they can continue their sports but it can also help push you further into excellence.

There have been many studies over the years to see how chiropractic care can have an effect on sports performance. Many of these studies seem to suggest that chiropractic care can play a larger role in improving sports performance than we realise. So, I am going to draw your attention to a couple of the articles around chiropractic and sports.

Researchers in Brazil looked at a group of 43 golfers and measured, over a four-week period, how far they could hit a golf ball. One group did stretches; the other did stretching and received chiropractic adjustments. The most significant finding was that at the end of the four-week period the average improvement for the golfers who stretched was less than 0.5m, whereas for the golfers who stretched and got chiropractic care, their drive improved by an average of 8m. What does this mean for you? Chiropractic care with associated muscle stretching seems to improve driving distance, when compared with muscle stretching alone.

In another study conducted here in NZ by researchers at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic, results suggested that there is a strong link between neck function and accurate proprioceptive processing, thus postural control ie study participants' brains were better able to 'see' where their arms were after an adjustment and they had an improved posture as a bonus!

The next step is to ask your chiropractor about how to improve your sports performance and they can help you from there. Do refer a friend, team-mate or family  member who you wish to succeed in their sporting endeavours to help them on the way this season.

Keep up the good work.
With love
Dr Hamish

I have decided to begin a new chapter in my life and I have sold the family home in Stoke where I have lived for about 17 years.  I have purchased a new one for myself in Pegasus Town which is about 30 minutes north of Christchurch.

It is a big adventure and I am excited.

I have two amazing adult daughters. Emma, who is here, lives in Wakefield with a very supportive and loving partner (Blair). She has a bedroom booked in Pegasus! My other daughter (Abbey) lives in Christchurch with her fiance (Simon).

Abbey moved to Christchurch at the age of 18 (nine years ago) and has plans to marry in 2020 and build a new home close to Pegasus. We are both rather "clucky" so some little people would be very welcome when the time is right for Abbey and Simon. I am preparing myself for this by establishing a solid foundation while I wait patiently and align myself with the thought of becoming a grandparent!

I joined the team at Tasman Bay Chiropractic in October 2017 and it has been an absolute privilege and pleasure to meet all of you and your families. Corrian and the team at Tasman Bay Chiropractic are passionate, caring, fun people and I have had an amazing time full of learning both professionally and personally.

I am so grateful for the chiropractic care I have received and I am committed to continuing with regular chiropractic care in Christchurch as a part of my own well-health.

I encourage you to strive for a life of happiness, health, and inspiration.

Expect the best for yourself and align yourself to allow it.

You are so worth it.

Fun, Growth, Changes and Leave

Jumping into 2019 was fun! Our ‘beginning of year’ theme saw Hamish and I ‘competing’ while working towards the first of our 2019 goals and of course there was quite a bit of friendly banter. Deb and the CA team set up some great resources in the practice to involve you all as much or as little as you wanted to. I really enjoyed seeing your interest in the Ketogenics programme and it was fantastic to hear feedback of your positive results. Everyone seems to have had more than a little fun with labelling me ‘biggest loser’!

My autumn focus is around my WFC leadership role at the World Federation of Chiropractic BeEPIC biennial congress meeting in Berlin. I will be facilitating part of the meeting which is a challenge that I am looking forward to.

The theme of our Congress is EPIC2019: Global Opportunities in Spine Care. Why EPIC? The shift towards evidence-based, people-centred, interprofessional and collaborative approaches to spine care is a framework around which the chiropractic profession can both build its growth and care for its clients.

While in Berlin, I will also attend the WFC Council meeting in my Pacific representative role.

Following my eight days of WFC commitments, I will be travelling to Friesland (in the Netherlands) to visit family and then on to Sweden to explore a country I have not visited before. Hamish will be caring for my appointment book in my absence. He will do a fantastic job.

It was with quite some sadness that I have accepted Debbie’s resignation. We have loved having her on our team and as we process her news, we celebrate all that she has brought to her role, our team and our practice. I am sure that you will have noticed that Deb’s passion is contagious! How she organised a bunch of burly Thursday night blokes to mindfully chew a raisin for many minutes is still something that is slightly bewildering!

During the time she was on our team, I have learnt from Deb that passion delivers change. What a joy to witness this at the Centre. We will continue to find fun activities to deliver health outcomes to those we serve, watch this space…..

Debbie’s bubbly personality, gentle ribbing, willingness to learn, sense of fun, clever ideas, team spirit and ability to draw people into whatever she is doing are all talents that we have truly loved having at TBC. I am sure that you will join me in wishing her the very best in her next adventure in Canterbury.

Hugs

Jogging into 2019

When the team agreed to set personal goals earlier this year I thought, right, this is the time to accomplish a goal I have had for some time and attempted on quite a few occasions. It is to be able to run five km. I always had some excuse for not making it.  With a team of supportive work mates and patients behind me I felt that this time I would succeed.

Have you ever watched someone running and it looks like they are having an effortless time of it?

The Dream ... There is a breeze whipping past my face while the sun warms my back, I can hear the sound of a dog in the distance, cicadas nearby are striking up a chorus with the promise of another hot summer's day.  My feet are drumming a noise on the pavement and I’m lost in the rush of blood pumping in my ears and the steady progress I am making.

vs

The Reality ... While all of the above is true - everything hurts!!  My face is red and blotchy, my lungs are screaming for air, my legs are like jelly and I just want the pain to go away.

But then it’s over and the feeling of accomplishment is awesome, I’m proud of myself and my commitment to get it done.

I found a UK website with podcasts so that I don’t even have to think about when to walk or run, the woman just tells me what to do.  It’s nine weeks of podcasts and I am a bit behind my intended schedule, but am happy to report I am making steady progress.

Thanks team for having my back.

Frequently Asked Question of the Season
Do I have to go to a GP to get ACC cover for chiropractic care for an injury?

No you do not need a referral for chiropractic care under ACC.  Your chiropractor will assess the injury and our CAs will have your claim sent to ACC.

Stressed?

Over the last five weeks Nelson/Tasman has had some pretty stressful times with fires and drought. Not news to most of us, but each of us will know someone who has been affected.

This can cause huge stress to people - stress of displacement, stress of loss, stress of dramatic changes to habits/routines or stress from just holding life together for the family. Sometimes we are so focused on coping we don't realise how stressed we are until we let out the breath that we have been holding.

Did you ever wonder why we asked the particular questions on our new client form that we ask you to complete at your first visit? When doing a chiropractic assessment one of the areas we look at with you is stress, and this could come in the form of emotional, physical or environmental stress, each of which takes its toll on our bodies.

Being in a constant state of stress it is not good for our bodies. It raises our cortisol levels, can lower our immune system and it can affect our thinking patterns resulting in more negative thinking, and thus associating this with our pain levels. Chiropractic helps to retrain your brain, helping to break the worry and stress thinking patterns and retraining those pain receptors. We are retraining our whole body to behave differently.

If you have been more stressed out lately, remember to make time to come in and have an adjustment and to help retrain that brain!

On our website, there is a section with some short videos called "The Reality Check". These are a selection of videos designed to help you with your chiropractic journey.
Here is the link to the reality check videos - do take a few minutes to watch the video that links to stress and the immune system which is at the bottom of the list and called Stress, Pain and the Immune System

Thinking of you all
Take care

Love and hugs, Victoria xx
