Assessing threat status of Australasian fungi

It is now possible to assess the threat status of fungi, using criteria developed for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

An Australasian Fungi Red List Workshop will be held in Melbourne, at Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, 22-26 July, organised by the Australasian Mycological Society Conservation Group.

We’ll be carrying out formal threat assessments of fungi from Australasia, using the IUCN Red List criteria. Experienced fungi red list assessors Anders Dahlberg (Sweden), Greg Mueller (USA) and Janet Scott (IUCN) will be attending.

In the lead up, we’ll be using the Global Fungal Red List Initiative website to compile information on candidate species.

Please contact Tom May if you would like to suggest species for assessment or attend the Workshop (free of charge; travel support may be available).

Roz: a big thank you, Sapphire

Sapphire has put in a sterling effort as Coordinator for Fungimap over the last 4 years. She has been the friendly face, volunteer coordinator, e-news and newsletter information gatherer and producer, replier to emails and much more since 2014.

We will miss her, but are delighted that she will play a continuing role in Fungimap as our Mycologist, furthering our ideals and objectives.

A big thank you too, to our volunteers who will keep everything running smoothly until we fill the position.

Roz Hart,
President, Fungimap

Tropical Fungi Project

The Queensland Mycological Society is producing a pocket field guide specifically for the Tropical Monsoon region of Australia, "Australian Tropical Mushrooms & Other Fungi".

The guide will illustrate 118 different species that commonly occur in tropical Australia, as well as some that are new finds. It also includes an introduction to the fungal kingdom and its different morphogroups, plus information on substrate, trophic role, size, spore print colour, and toxicity for each species. For more info visit the QMS.

Fungi Events

NZ Fungal Foray

The Fungal Network of New Zealand is having its 33rd NZ Fungal Foray and 19th Colloquium from May 12-19.  The event is based at Awakeri Events Centre which gives access to many nearby forests and reserves. There will be special activities including a trip to Whakaari White Island and a visit to Moutohora Island. Registration ends on March 31st.  For more info visit the FNNZ.

Sponsor a Species

Our editors are working hard to complete the next edition of 'Fungi Down Under'. You can help by sponsoring one or more of the fungi, such as the beautiful species shown here.
At a cost of $100 for each species, these are tax-deductible donations to the Austral Fungi Fund, and will help pay for the publication costs of the book. To find the species needing to find a sponsor, please visit our shop.
