FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT
(10 March 2019)

Deuteronomy 26:1–11          Romans 10:8b–13          Luke 4:1–13

Jesus Christ Is Our Champion Against the Devil

Jesus Christ, our champion against the devil, endures and overcomes “every temptation” (Luke 4:13) on our behalf. He worships the Lord, His God, and serves Him only by trusting the Word of His Father: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased” (Luke 3:22). Jesus’ victory is now ours through His gracious Word, which is not far away but near us — in our mouth and in our heart, in the proclamation of repentance and faith. For “with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved” (Rom. 10:10). Our confession of Christ includes the prayer of faith, which is not disappointed, “for ‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved’” (Rom. 10:13). The Lord is not oblivious to “our affliction, our toil, and our oppression” (Deut. 26:7), but has mercy upon us. He has brought us out of bondage through the “signs and wonders” of Holy Baptism, “with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm” (Deut. 26:8), and now He leads us by His Spirit even in the wilderness.   (Taken from the lectionary summaries on the LCMS website)

Making a Prayer Request: Home-bound members, those hospitalized, members of the armed forces, and others are frequently remembered in both personal and public prayers. We weep with those who weep; we rejoice with those who rejoice. Are there specific prayer requests to note in this Newsletter, the Sunday Bulletin, or for Sunday's public prayers during the Liturgy? For this Newsletter and the Sunday Bulletin the effort is made to update these weekly. Please contact the church office by phone (253-584-2565) or email: office@poplakewood.org.

Prayer requests will be kept on the list for two weeks unless otherwise requested.  Please help us keep the prayer requests up-to-date with any additions or updates, thank you.

PUGET SOUND MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH GATHERING
Thank You Prince of Peace! For allowing me to be away to take part in this year’s youth gathering as the Keynote speaker!

We had 11 churches represented, 29 youth and 21 Adults. Our theme this year was Prisoners of the Word. In which we spent much time in discussion of John 8:30-59 in what it meant to be captive to sin and alive in Christ. We also looked at how St. Paul called him self a slave to Christ in his letters, Daniel 1, 2 led us to see those who make the great confession of faith in a changing and challenging world as Christ’s servants, and Romans 8:31-39 served to remind us that no matter what this world throws at us, we can stand firm in our confession of faith and that NOTHING can separate us from the love of Christ Jesus.

I look forward to doing more with the PSYB (Puget Sound Youth Board) in the future as we partner with our sister congregations throughout the Puget Sound to provide activities and life changing events for our youth!

Big thanks to your Elder Ian Smith who covered for me in my absence sharing with you a wonderful sermon on dying looking forward in Faith at the promise like Moses and not looking back at the life’s events that pale in comparison to the glory ahead of us. We truly are blessed to have Elders that are willing to serve and step up and serve. Please take some time to get to know your Elder. If you don’t know feel free to ask one of them who your Elder is and we will get back to you.

WORSHIP SURVEY RESULTS – Thank you for your response to our survey we received 38 surveys back. The worship committee will take these results into consideration for worship planning this year.

The results are as follows:

Would you be interested in doing a Seder Worship Service in the fellowship hall for Maunday Thursday? Or a Standard Maunday Thursday Service this year (2019)?

Seder Meal Worship Service – 22
Standard Maunday Thursday Worship Service – 14
*2 were left blank

Would you like to attend a Holy Saturday service again this year?
Yes - 16
No – 19
*3 were left blank
*At this time it looks like we will be foregoing the Holy Saturday service this year, but we will be looking into the option and possibility of the Seder Meal Worship Service. If you are able and willing to contribute a Thrivent Action Team to pay for the costs of the meal or help prepare the food, please speak to pastor. We already have 2 committed to providing an action team and one who is committed to helping prepare the food. The more help and action teams we have, the more we would be able to do should we decide to move forward with this. Thank you! – Pastor Paul
