Recruitment
Please let the director of the Office of Graduate Diversity and Inclusion (OGDI), Christopher Pérez (cperez6@umd.edu), know about admitted students from any fee waiver programs.  The Graduate School partners with these programs to attract potential students to UMD.  These partnerships can be an instrumental and compelling network for those who are still trying to make a decision about UMD.  Christopher can provide assistance regarding resources for admitted students and recruitment resources to UMD faculty and staff.

Christopher also manages the Graduate School Diversity Recruitment Working Group (GS DRWG).  The group provides strategic planning, best practices, and campus-wide collaboration in diversity recruitment to University of Maryland.  The group consists of faculty, staff, and graduate students invested in the recruitment of diverse graduate students, e.g., women in STEM, students of color, students with disabilities, non-traditional students, first-generation students, low-income students, LGBTQ+ students, veterans, interfaith and religious diversity. The group meets quarterly, and the next meeting is in March (date/time TBD).  Any interested faculty, staff, and graduate students who wish to join should contact Christopher.
Admissions
New Admits with English Conditions. Applicants admitted for Fall, 2019 into Intensive English or the English Bridge Program will have until May 31st to submit a new TOEFL/IELTS/PTE score to try and change their English placement.  We would highly encourage these new admits to enroll in and complete the two month long VOXY-UMD Bridge Program before retaking their English test as this will provide an opportunity to better prepare for the test and earn a higher score.  Please note that 84 on TOEFL and 6.0 on IETLS are the minimum scores that we can accept for admission into Intensive English.  If you have applicants you are interested in admitting but who fail to meet this requirement, the VOXY-UMD Bridge Program would also be recommended for them to undertake before retaking an English exam.

ANNUAL UPDATES. By now you may have heard from your program's Graduate Admissions Advisory Group (GAAG) representative about Hobsons Annual Updates 2019. Last year after a considerable amount of feedback, we move the update process up in the calendar year to accommodate faculty and staff.
To facilitate this change, we are asking you to submit any requests for edits through the Admissions Annual Update Request Form. All programs are asked complete an annual update form, either to modify admissions requirements and deadlines or to actively opt out of this year's annual updates. The Google form opened today (March 1, 2019) and will remain open until the deadline for submissions on May 15, 2019.
This year's Annual Updates will take place on June 3rd & 4th with testing by Program Coordinators being done on June 5th & 6th. Please mark your calendars now for testing days. It’s very important.
The application is scheduled to go live again on June 11th, 2019.

To access instructions and the form click the following link blog.umd.edu/annualupdates/to navigate to the Graduate School’s Admissions Toolkit.

Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) Doctoral Scholar Award Program at UMD
The Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that works side-by-side with policymakers such as state legislators and education agency officials as they implement policies to help students achieve more, prepare students for college and careers, and boost college completion. The goal of the SREB Doctoral Scholars Program is to increase the number of minority students who earn doctorates and choose to become faculty at colleges and universities. The Graduate School has agreed to be an SREB Institutional Funding Partner and is looking forward to partnering with UMD programs to support SREB Doctoral Scholars.

We invite programs to nominate eligible students for the Institutionally Funded SREB Doctoral Scholar Award by April 30, 2019.  Please view the Graduate School’s SREB Doctoral Scholar nomination instructions and program commitment requirements.

This survey is being administered by six members of the Big Ten Academic Alliance. We will share the results in the Fall. As an incentive for graduate students to participate, we will conduct a drawing for payment of a semester of mandatory fees for five of the students who substantially complete the survey. Questions should be directed to Jeffrey Franke (jfranke@umd.edu).
