Are you curious as to the issue and impacts of invasive species in the Central Kootenay region? Do you want to minimize the impacts of invasive species on the ecosystems, communities, and economy of the Central Kootenay region? If you do, then there are exciting opportunities for you to join the team at CKISS! We are looking for two team players with strong communication skills who love physical work in an outdoor setting to fill the role of Invasive Species Technicians.
Government report reveals boats contaminated with invasive mussels were Kootenay bound.
The 2018 interim report on the Provincial Mussel Defence Programwas recently published on the program’s website. It revealed that out of the 38,000 watercraft inspected during the 2018 operating season twenty-five boats were confirmed to have highly invasive zebra and/or quagga mussels(ZQM). The stations were open from April until October 2018 and luckily they stopped mussel-fouled boats that were destined for the Lower Mainland (11), Okanagan (3), Thompson-Nicola (5), Vancouver Island (4), and the Kootenays (2).
We are thrilled to welcome Kalenna Olynyk as our new Operations Program Coordinator. Kalenna holds a Bachelor of Science degree (Honours) in Biology from the University of British Columbia. She moved from Ontario in 2013 and has since developed a passion to protect and manage the beautiful ecosystems found in British Columbia. She has been working in the invasive species world since 2015 and has been the Field Program Manager for the Sea to Sky Invasive Species Council. She is excited for the new opportunity with CKISS and to help the team protect the unique and beautiful environments found in the Kootenays. Her favourite projects include aquatic habitat inventories, improving data management systems and ecosystem restoration. In her spare time, Kalenna likes to head into the mountains: skiing, mountain biking and rock climbing.
