Sermon Teaser

I remember what a strange experience it was to go home at Christmas after my first semester of college. I had been away for four months, the longest stretch of time I had ever been away from home. I had made a new group of friends and experienced a whole new world: living in a dorm, attending lectures, doing my own laundry, assuming sole responsibility for getting up, making it to class, and keeping up with assignments. But as I left campus at the start of Christmas vacation, I wondered what it would be like to go home. Would it be the same or different?

The Israelites wondered the same thing when after 50 years in exile they returned home from Babylon.  Would it be the same or different?  Find out Sunday: Isaiah 35:1-10—“Coming Home to a New Place.”

Sunday School Teaser

This Sunday I am beginning a four week Sunday School class after church (11:30 to 12:30 in the sanctuary). I call it “The Theology of Calvin … and Hobbes.” It turns out that the spiky-haired little boy in the comic strip is named for the most famous theologian in the Presbyterian Church: John Calvin. And his pet tiger is named for a 17th century philosopher named Thomas Hobbes. In their comic strip interactions Calvin and Hobbes generate a lot of theology, a significant amount of which could be called “Presbyterian.” So that is what we will study. Here are the themes:

  • March 10: “The Sovereignty of God: Creation, Predestination, and Why We Are Here”
  • March 17: “Sin: The Problem with People and What Can Be Done About It”
  • March 24: “Grace: A New Relationship with God and Others”
  • March 31 (The class takes a one week break for LaVonne Mahugh’s
  • slideshow presentation on Antarctica)
  • April 7: “Eternal Life: Now and Later”

Join us Sunday at 11:30 in the sanctuary.

Making the Connection: Women's Retreat

Mar 23, 10 am - 2 pm

In what ways do you connect to God? To other people? To God’s Creation? How have you experienced God connecting to you? These are the themes we’ll be exploring at the Women’s Retreat this year. Two of our own women, Karen McMichael and Sue Warner-Bean will share their thoughts. We’ll also have time for Bible study, small groups and meditation. We’ll share our usual lunch, greens and breads provided. Sign up in the coffee room to bring your favorite salad topping or a dessert.

Pal Craftaid Sale

Mar 24, 11:15 am

PalCraftaid started in 1993 as a short term venture importing sculpted olive wood products, hand carved by Palestinian craftspeople, and selling them here in the US, and then sending the proceeds back to Palestine to help a few families survive economically and gain hope.  Over the years, it has morphed into the organization it is today.

PalCraftaid works with several groups of Palestinian artisans in the West Bank and Gaza, including The Bethlehem Arab Women’s Union, The Il Bambino Shop in Bethlehem, and the Melia Art and Training Center in East Jerusalem.  Recipients of funding from the sale of these products include Aid to the Aged, The Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children, The Rawdat El-Zuhur School, The Arab Orthodox Society, and the YWCA of Palestine.

WIA has secured a large box of Olive wood products that will be for sale after worship on Sunday, March 24th. There are practical items like spoons and candlesticks, and more decorative items such as carved nativities, crosses, and a variety of different ornaments. All of the proceeds of this sale will be returned to PalCraftaid to help with the support of the programs PalCraftaid has developed over the years.

This will be our final sale for PalCraftaid, as they have announced the organization will be closing in June. Please come and support PalCraftaid with your purchases.
