Rainbows Remind us of God's Promise

One of the ways the team at Coastal Roots Farm honors Jewish tradition is through Jewish learning and reflection. Read Education Manager Sharone Oren's kavanah (literally, intention) related to all of the beautiful rain we have been receiving:

Every time it rains in Encinitas, there’s a chance of seeing a rainbow. In Judaism, every blessing has meaning behind it to remind us not to take things for granted. There is even have a blessing for seeing a rainbow, which says: “Blessed are you God, who remembers the covenant, is faithful to the covenant, and keeps God’s promise”.

This promise is about remembering the flood that God brought during Noah’s time on earth. When the flood ceased, God established a covenant with Noah that whenever a rainbow is seen it means that the waters will never again become a flood that will destroy all living things.

So, whenever we see a rainbow at the Farm, we remember this covenant and know that no matter how much it rains, we will not get flooded. It may be dark and gloomy for a little while, but the colors of the rainbow lift our spirit and we give thanks and remember God’s promise.

How can Jewish Community Farms affect change?

For the past four years, Coastal Roots Farm has been part of the Jewish Community Farming Field Building Initiative, a gathering of people who lead educational Jewish Farms nationwide (click here to learn more about other Jewish Community Farms).

We have developed a field-wide theory of change, including strategies, core values, and outcomes.

Our Purpose
Integrate Jewish experiential education with agriculture in order to cultivate community, promote environmental sustainability and food justice, foster opportunities for meaningful spiritual engagement and personal growth, and strengthen Jewish life.

Our Ultimate Outcome
An engaged, inspired, and compassionate Jewish community that is spiritually connected to Jewish earth-based and agricultural traditions, actively engaged in food justice efforts, and practices responsible stewardship of the earth.

We are launching a field-wide evaluation survey that will help us evaluate the impact that the field has had in the past three years. Please consider filling out the survey today!
