MANDATORY UPDATE - Employment Standards Act Poster

In alignment with numerous updates to the Employment Standards Act that came into effect on January 1, 2019, the Ministry of Labour has introduced an updated employment standards poster which applies to most employers in Ontario. The poster provides employees with direct access to the Ministry of Labour website for information about employment rights and minimum standards.

Effective January 1, 2019, this poster (version 8.0) must be posted in the workplace where employees are likely to see it.  A copy of the poster must also be provided to every employee.  The previous poster (version 7.0) should be taken down and discarded.

AN UPDATE TO THE ‘ON AGAIN / OFF AGAIN’ PAY TRANSPARENCY ACT IN ONTARIO

NCHR has been following the proposed Pay Transparency Act in Ontario.  If you recall from our last e-newsletter the Ontario Government announced an indefinite delay to reforms that were slated for January 1, 2019 wherein employers would have been required to indicate salary or pay ranges on all job advertisements and prohibited from asking job candidates questions about their previous compensation levels.  In addition, organizations with more than 100 employees would have been required to submit annual pay transparency reports to the government and employers would have been prohibited from disciplining employees who openly discuss compensation details with other employees.

The Ministry of Labour is now seeking   input from the public about the perceived   impact estimated costs and time investment the   proposed Pay Transparency Act may have on   our economy.

We expect to see further developments by late spring.  The aim of the Pay Transparency Act is to promote compensation transparency and reduce the wage gap in Ontario between working men and women.
