Clinical Trials BC News | Communication of clinical research study results working group seeks additional patient partner

The Canadian Clinical Research Participation Survey, completed in 2018 by Clinical Trials BC, showed that clinical trial participants want to know what the research community learned from their participation. However, most reported that they never hear from the sponsor or research site staff after a clinical trial has concluded.

A provincial working group was formed in 2019 to identify methods to increase communication of study results to participants in BC. The latest addition to the group is Terri Fleming, Unit Director of Research Ethics BC

The working group held its first meeting on Feb 11th, 2019 and the next meeting will be in April. One patient partner has joined, but the working group is looking for another patient partner member who has experience participating in a clinical trial.

Do you, or does someone you know, want to join the group? Please email Alison Orth below.

The February 26th session began with a welcome and acknowledgement of the Coast Salish territories made by Tsawaysia Spukwus of the Squamish Nation.

Events | BC AHSN brings international experts on learning health systems to Quality Forum 2019 event

On February 26th, 2019, we partnered with the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council (BCPSQC) to hold a session at their annual Quality Forum 2019 (#QF19). This full-day session brought together new and existing stakeholders, a panel of international experts and keynote guest speakers who discussed the potential and benefits of learning health systems in BC.

Guest speakers included Charles Friedman from the Department of Learning Health Sciences at University of Michigan Medical School, Sir Chris Ham from Health Policy & Management at the University of Birmingham and Jeanne Huddleston from Health Care Systems Engineering Program at the Mayo Clinic.

Thanks to the numerous social-media-savvy attendees who shared their learnings with the online community, the event hashtag, #QF19, trended nationally throughout the day on Twitter.

Special thanks to BCPSQC for hosting the event, and to all of the attendees who kept the energy level high throughout the day. Photos from the session have been compiled in an online photo album, accessed by clicking the button below.

Clinical Trials BC News | Clinical Trials BC presents at N2 Toronto annual conference; follow-up webinar registration opens

Clinical Trials BC was thrilled to be asked to participate at the N2 (Network of Networks) Annual Meeting held in Toronto in early February.

Alison Orth, Unit Director (photo above), joined a panel discussion that focused on why clinical research in Canada is important from a variety of stakeholder perspectives including academic, industry, Health Canada and the public. Currently, there are 6,000 active clinical trials in Canada, according to Daniel Keene of Health Canada - not an insignificant number. Alison also shared research results from the article recently published by Clinical Trials BC in Sage Journals about public and patient perspectives of clinical trials in Canada, including their preferred sources for learning about available trials.

Follow-Up Webinar Announced

The partnership with N2 will continue throughout 2019. Please save the date for a conference follow-up webinar, which will be held on April 9th at 11:00am-12:00pm Pacific Time. This webinar is open to all stakeholders and will be the first national presentation of the Canadian Clinical Research Participation Survey results.
