Become a Committee Chair with the Southern Nevada Section. We encourage you to nominate yourself for one or more of the available Committee Chair positions: Awards, Environmental Improvement, Long Range Planning, Minority Affairs, Nominations (for the annual election), Government Affairs, Younger Chemists. Self nominations may be emailed to the SNS Secretary. Please include a bio/profile (one paragraph). The following individuals have been appointed as Committee Chairs for 2019.

US National Chemistry Olympiad - Local Exam on March 29, 2019
Calling all chemistry teachers and high school students! Southern Nevada HS Chemistry Teachers were contacted and are encouraged to ask their students to participate in the 2019 Local Qualifying Exam for the 2019 U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) Exam. The Local Exam will take place on March 29, 2019 from 3 – 4:30 PM, at the College of Southern Nevada, Charleston Campus, Building H, Room 207. High schools with one chemistry teacher may send up to five students and high schools with more than one chemistry teacher may send up to ten students. Teachers are asked to notify the ACS Southern Nevada, Chemistry Olympiad Coordinator, Mark Garner by email (mark.garner@csn.edu) with the names of the students who will be attending from their school to aid him in preparation for administering the exam and to expedite communication of the results following the exam. ACS Southern Nevada can nominate only ten students, no more than two from any school, to participate in the 2019 USNCO which will take place on April 26-27, 2019.
Planning for 2022 Western Region Meeting
Proposal in progress! At the upcoming Western Region Board Meeting (April 3) in Orlando, the Southern Nevada Section will present their proposal to host a Western Region Meeting in Las Vegas in 2022. Thank you to everyone who helped to put together this proposal.
Undergraduate and Graduate Student Grants
Reminder for students. We encourage you to apply for funding, especially to help with conference travel expenses. Click on the image below to email Executive Committee members for information or to obtain an application. Note that there are two deadlines per year (January 15, June 15) and this is a competitive application process.

Career Fair - Cancelled
We regret to inform you that the Career Fair planned for Las Vegas on March 9 has been cancelled.
Seminar on April 9
Save the date! On Tuesday, April 9th we will have a seminar at UNLV on the evolution of mass spectrometry by Richard Phillips of ThermoFisher Scientific. There will be snacks and a chance to meet the presenter and other ACS members from 5:30-6:00 pm. The presentation will begin at 6:00 pm. An abstract and bio will appear in the next newsletter, as well as the room location. Students - this is a great opportunity to learn about mass spectrometry and its progression over time. Earth Day Event on April 20
Sign up to volunteer! The Southern Nevada Section will once again host a booth at GreenFest in Summerlin. We will have hands-on activities for kids, and the event is from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. If you want to be part of the planning team, contact the Community Outreach Coordinator, Erica Marti. To volunteer please contact Erica or use this link to add your name for one or more 2-hour shifts.
Annual Award Ceremony
Each year we hold an annual meeting and awards ceremony to recognize accomplishments of long-time members and outstanding college students, as well as high school students participating in Chemistry Olympiad. We anticipate the awards ceremony will be held during the week of April 29 to May 3. The specific details and speaker will be announced in the next newsletter.
